TOOL DRUMMER DANNY CAREY DISCUSSES OPIATE 21ST ANNIVERSARY REISSUE

Tool drummer Danny Carey discussed Tool’s 21st anniversary reissue of their EP Opiate recently in a Q&A on his website:

On how he would record his percussion now with technological advances: “It would be much different process, from a percussion standpoint, if I was to compose my parts now. I can’t help but use the tools and technology afforded to me today. That’s not to say it would be any better, because the shear, raw power of that recording is, in a large part, what made it a valid effort in that time period. However, I could imagine some sections being embellished by a larger pallet of ethnic sounds I now have at my fingertips.”

On releasing a 21st anniversary edition of Opiate rather than a 20th anniversary edition: “The human condition between physical and spiritual realms along with being an unstable hybid product of genetic manipulation was a frequent topic of discussion at the time we put Opiate together, so it seemed more appropriate to celebrate at 21 years rather than 20.”

Watching it right now, it’s great. Tomahawk was on earlier, A Perfect Circle tonight, and Pearl Jam tomorrow night; I love live streaming!!

  • Chadimus

OPIATE love em..oh and Tool too

  • Philip

Despite the exorbitantly high sticker price, I’m glad I picked up one of these “Opiate” 21st anniversary reissues. All 25,000 copies sold-out almost right away. Unless you’re ready to get gouged on Ebay…

  • Abe Froman

Actually Philip, if their website is to be believed, you just got one of 5,000, not 25,000, (they made 1,000 of each of the five versions) so that item you just bought is more of a limited edition than you realize.

I bought one also, but I have the disposable income to afford it. If I had kids I certainly wouldn’t be buying it.

It was with mixed feelings too, that I bought it considering it seems like a lot more of a cash grab, where the Mad Season re-issue seems more about paying tribute to the music. Maybe I have blinders on, but that’s how it feels to me.
(not to mention, the Above re-issue will have 3 new tracks, 2 live DVDs, & I Paid about 1/5th of the price.)

  • Philip

It’s actually 5,000 of each of the 5 variations of this package. So it is a total of 25,000 copies. Though I’m also glad I don’t have kids and could afford this. True there isn’t new music, but all the original art included is pretty sick and I don’t think it’s a cash grab. They don’t need the cash at all. Still $150 is quite a bit for it…

  • Abe Froman

I’m not trying to start a pissing contest, but following is consistent with everything I’ve heard about this Opiate re-issue:

“Pre-sales for the 21st anniversary release of the OPIATE CD PACKAGE will begin on FRIDAY, MARCH 22 (with general sales on TUESDAY, MARCH 26). There are a LIMITED NUMBER of pre-sale copies, so, for now, let’s keep it to a maximum of 3 copies of each of the 5 variations per member. As mentioned previously, there are a total of 5 variations of 1000 , making 5000 copies in all (Again, with a LIMITED number available for the Toolarmy pre-sale). ALL of the packages are SIGNED by all four band members, and come with a number of extra items pertaining to the new art design (see the on-line store description for more about this), including a certificate of authenticity.”

Even Toolarmy.com was taking about 5 different versions of 1,000 overall.

  • $150.00?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Sweet jesus, that’s how much that reissue was for with no new music? It better have come with some pretty fucking sweet artwork and other shit.

I understand it’s a small release, but that’s $3,750,000 gross on nothing new.

Unless I’m missing something enormous, that’s the cash grab of all cash grabs.

  • Philip

If the mistake was mine I own it Abe, sorry about that. The reissue is also hand-signed & numbered by all four bands members.

  • Philip

    “band members” that is.

    [long pause]

    I had a friend once,
    he took some acid,
now he thinks he’s a fire engine

    It’s ok,
until he pisses on your lighter,
    kinda smells,
    kinda cool,
    kinda funny anyway

    satan.
    satan.
    satan.
    satan.
    satan.

    I had a friend once,
    he took some ecstasy,
    tried to marry me,
    and everyone in the room.

    He was sorta loving,
    kinda caring,
kinda tried to fuck my lazy boy.

    It got a bit messy,
    all over the curtains,
    armchair covers,
    throw pillows,
    and carpeting.

    getting bored,
    I’m getting bored,
    getting bored,
    I’m getting bored,
    getting bored,
    I’m getting bored,
    getting bored,
    I’m getting bored!

    *Whoever wrote the “150.00!?!?!?!?!”,

-Understand, if no one buys any they don’t collect anything. It’s something the band put out, then it’s up to fans if they buy one or not. No one is forcing anything on anyone. I’ve been a fan for 20 years. Am I upset at them that they released this? No. I think it’s cool. Sure it is expensive. It’s an investment that only accrues almost instantly. I’m happy to have a copy to honor their first record, and as a hold-over until the new album comes out. The supplemental artwork looks dope. I enjoy limited, signed & numbered releases. Actually it’s my thing…

  • Toolsh1p

I love Tool music very much but 150$ for nothing new is to much, 30$ would be ok for that.
    thats not ok from Tool

  • Justin

I had purchased variant number 3 of this Opiat 21st anniversary release and although Tool is one of my favorite bands,
I had found this package to not be what I had expected! I know that I had purchased exactly what was advertised and maybe I was a little to excited and eager to buy this package, but now that I have it in my hands I feel 150 bucks was
    To much to pay!
I feel that the envelope part of the package they had signed should have been a bit thicker meaning more room for the items inside. I thought I was going to destroy the signed packaging trying to remove the cd/book/extras inside. Returning the items back into the envelope was scary! I kind of formed a weak spot/bulge on the top corner while trying to slip the contents back in. If any of you are collectors try not to remove the contents inside if you don’t want to risk destroying the signed packaging! This barely has enough room to fit was in it to begin with. The bulge from the cd
Would seem to weaken the heavy duty construction paper type of material over time. I didn’t even return the cd!
I’m to nervouse to find out years from now that it will be damaged from it.

For charging that much they should know that people will buy it as an investment! Maybe they should have spent more
Time scoping over this outer package the same!

    I still love Tool though!
