Sub Pop Announce Record Store Day 2014 Releases

In anticipation of this April’s Record Store Day 2014, Sub Pop Records has announced its planned limited edition vinyl releases for the annual event. On the record label’s website, Sub Pop announced their releases, stating: “we went to work, trimmed the fat, and got our release list to the four most exciting, collectable, sonically pleasing, limited-edition Sub Pop Record Store Day Releases ever.”

On Record Store Day, Sub Pop will unveil releases from Mudhoney, Pissed Jeans, Chad VanGaalen, and The Notwist:

Mudhoney On Top:  KEXP Presents Mudhoney Live on Top of the Space Needle LP: In 2013 both Mudhoney and Sub Pop turned 25, and, in celebration of this milestone, the band performed on the actual roof of Seattle’s iconic and also very tall Space Needle. Due to space limitations up on top, and the obvious safety issues involved, only about 13 people were able to bear witness to this performance (and you can hear each of them, clapping individually between songs). Our friends at KEXP recorded and broadcast this monumentally historic event, and this limited-edition vinyl LP preserves it for eternity. Limited to 2,700 copies worldwide.

Pissed Jeans The Very Best of Sub Pop 2009-2013: Live at the BBC 12” EP: Here are four live-in-the-studio tracks that (finally!) give meaning and validation to Sub Pop’s existence. This historic platter is limited to 3,000 copies worldwide, and these versions of the tracks are exclusive to this release.

Chad VanGaalen “I Want You Back” 7” Single: This single features four new tracks from the Calgary artist’s vault of unheard music. Exactly none of these tracks appear on Chad’s forthcoming album, Shrink Dust (out 4/29 on Sub Pop!). The dare-we-say incredible cover art is by Chad himself. Limited to 2,300 copies worldwide.

The Notwist “Run Run Run” 12” Single: “Run Run Run” is from the band’s just-released album, Close to the Glass, and this single also includes three more, unreleased tracks: one new song, and two exclusive remixes of “Run Run Run.” Both sides of the record feature a special double groove, with each parallel groove containing a different song. Limited to 1,900 copies worldwide.

Mark Lanegan has released his new collaboration with Moby, a song entitled ‘The Lonely Night.’ The song is set for release on Record Store Day on April 20, but fans can listen to the song now:

The new song is set for release as a 7″ single on Record Store Day, while the single will also feature a B-side remix from British artist Photek. Speaking on his collaboration with Lanegan, Moby has stated that “[he’s] been a fan of Mark’s from his early SST Records days, and [he’s] always wanted to work with him. He has one of the best and most distinctive voices of the last 25 years.” Moby added that because he and Lanegan live in Southern California, the recording process was an easy one.

Speaking on the production of the song ‘The Lonely Night,’ Moby claims to have “some very unusual production techniques.” The song employs only three tracks: “left channel through a distortion pedal and guitar amp, right channel through a distortion pedal and guitar amp, and Mark’s vocals.” The production techniques used in the song have resulted in an atmospheric sound.

Mark Lanegan is set to release a new song with Moby, entitled “The Lonely Night,” on April 20. The Record Store Day release will feature the 7″ single as well as a B-side featuring a remix of the song by the Los Angeles-based British artist Photek. Moby recently posted to Facebook: “Shooting a video yesterday for a collaboration we’ll be announcing in April,” along with a photo of the video set (below). Mark Lanegan can be seen on the far right.
