Chris Cornell Talks Reaction To Kurt Cobain’s Death: ‘There’s No Silver Lining To This’

Chris Cornell discussed the November 2015 terrorist attack on Eagles of Death Metal’s show at the Bataclan in Paris on KISW’s Men’s Room yesterday, and how he had difficulty finding a way to talk about the show to his own live audience, especially having played the same venue a few years prior. Alternative Nation transcribed a couple of quotes.

“Normally when a horrible thing, a tragedy, you go out on stage, and you talk about it, and you try to say something. Either you are sort of flooded with emotion, or you’re pissed off, and you go out and yell and scream. That was a situation where I felt like, I don’t think I really want to bring this up now while there’s an audience sitting in seats the same way the audience was sitting in those seats watching Eagles of Death Metal. Innocent people just out trying to relax and see a rock show, and forget about the day for a minute. That’s all they were guilty of.”

He also discussed Kurt Cobain’s death.

“It’s something that happened I think when Kurt died. At the time, I think people considered me someone that was somewhat together (laughs). I don’t know why, they didn’t know me, so I was getting calls to participate in interviews where I think they kind of wanted to hear somebody say a positive thing. I remember saying, ‘There’s no silver lining to this. There’s nothing good to say about this.’ It’s a horrible thing.”

Kurt Cobain’s Ex-Girlfriend: ‘Courtney Love Threatened To Cut Off My Head & Burn Down My House’

Kurt Cobain’s ex-girlfriend Mary Lou Lord made headlines across the internet last week for her comments on Courtney Love, and she was at it again over the weekend with the following Facebook post:

I should have sued the bitch a long time ago.
But that’s not something that ever would have fixed anything. Maybe
temporarily, but it wasn’t and never will be a thing money can heal.

I never came up to her and said a thing.
She broke my teeth, she cracked my skull and she caused
me years of hell. The physical pain went away, but her words, and
her lies and the impact it left never went away. I honestly feel that
people should know about this.
Here in this photo/interview, she admits it. It was taken off of you tube, but
in this interview, she tells of the night she beat me, chased me, and so forth.

I did watch soaked in bleach, and regardless
of my stance on his death, which, I have no opinion on, it re-ignited an anger
in me that I never thought would be so profound. Anger is bad. I hate it.
But if you think I am saying all this now for any potential gain in anything, I am not.
I could have sued her. I didn’t. I tried to take the high road and move on.
I just tried to make the best music I could, and not let this effect me.
But she carried on attacking me for years, and I was in constant fear. Insane fear.
She threatened me, she also threatened my elderly parents who I was living
with through the many years of my early career. She threatened to burn our house down, and threatened to kill me with a gun, and cut off my head.
I’m not sorry to vent this publicly. That Soaked In Bleach movie just rattled
me so much. And I think people should know. She might be doing better now, but I still feel inside her, she is a rotten person . Money helps, clearly. (To a sociopath like her), and now, She has tons of it. Through law suits that HIS MONEY paid for!!! and the damage that SHE brought upon herself! So, why “wouldn’t” she be doing “better now”?
The movie just triggered so many emotions. How sad and pointless.
His death itself, etc. Just so fucking sad. It also triggered feelings about how
sad Elliott’s passing was as well. If you think this was easy for me, and others who went through this at that time, you’re wrong. I don’t think I’m entirely batshit crazy for talking about this either. I know I will let it go, and I think this is part of the process. It’s gross in a way to talk publicly about it all (i know that), but you, as fans and music lovers, and friends, are part of the fabric that this entire world of the music we make, and love, is woven from. It’s our reality, and our emotions regarding it, should never be denied.

Kurt Cobain’s Ex-Girlfriend ‘Received Death Threats’ From Courtney Love

Yesterday, we reported on Kurt Cobain’s ex-girlfriend Mary Lou Lord unloading on Courtney Love in a Facebook post. When went even more in-depth on a second post:

“I just wanted to thank you guys for being cool and tolerating my ranting

about CL over the last few days. Something did indeed spark it…but I’m trying to let it all go now. A lot of you (old friends), were right there with me in the middle of this black tornado’s thrust, and I know it effected you too. It was a very weird and sad time for so many of us. For those of you who were there, this is for you too. I know your feelings aren’t that far removed. And although we don’t see each other much these days, know I love you.

I know this is long, and boring….and yes, it is public. It’s just as public as the VERY public (in print, etc) , kick in the guts she gave me over an extended amount of time, and extended amount of threats. One, that has been a long time getting over, and one, that’s been a long time letting go of. Everyone should be able to have their day where they say exactly what they have wanted to say to someone who violated them. I’m most likely never gonna write a book, and if I suddenly croak, I want to finally have my say and my voice heard on this. Not hers. Mine.

I’ve mentioned things here and there, but out of respect for Kurt and Frances, I never fully publicized ALL my feelings on this subject. No kid should have to read shitty things said about their parents. Especially when they are unable to understand or formulate their own opinions. Also, in the past, when I did say a few things here and there, it was FOR Frances if she had ever read what Courtney herself said about me concerning Kurt. What Courtney said, was actually a put down to her own husband. Those of you who know what I am talking about will understand what I mean. I said it in defense OF Kurt. He was NOT that kind of a guy who would do that. I wanted Frances (if she had ever privately read it), to know that. -That was one of the other incredibly disturbing aspects of Courtney’s lies. How it was also a total defamation of Kurt’s character within the context of her lie, and her wording. Printed in Rolling Stone, just weeks after he had died, when SHE was on the cover. And of course, Hole’s Live Through This, was #1. And, for weeks after this, it was HER not ME who was bringing attention to any involvement I might have had with him. I felt like a dork. I NEVER brought it up in interviews. It was her who planted any of the fucked up attention it got to begin with. I just wanted to hide and cry.

In the past, I let (or, I thought I had), let it go. I guess that for some reason there was still a part that I hadn’t let go of. Anger is shitty. Anger over something that happened 22 years ago. It might have something to do with these movies coming out, and having to partially re-live a feeling that never really went away. Or, was dormant. Seeing her or even hearing about her, kind of jolts me into anger. Why now? I dunno. Why do some people who got violated by priests, or hurt decades prior suddenly have the need to come forth and tell their story? I was absolutely emotionally violated by her, and it hurt me more than anyone will ever know. The defamation, the lies, and the spin off of that. Having to deal over the years with fans of hers who hated me for something that was not true to begin with. They clung on her every word, every move. Also, I was petrified of her. I feared for my life. There was no way to fight back-she was too powerful and no one would have believed me(trying to fight her lies), nor, would they have given a shit. I was a no-one. I still am pretty much a no one in comparison with her, but I am much more fearless now. I suppose, in a way, it’s similar to how years later when people are grown up, and if they were abused, and had to remain silent, they finally confront a pedophile priest or abusive person that is now old, and elderly, and broken. To finally confront a person who scared the living shit out of them, as well as abused them either emotionally, or physically. It IS a relief. It really is. I don’t look at her with pity really, (she is more beautiful than ever, and seems happy, etc)….But I feel like I can finally speak out because I am not alone any longer. People don’t believe her. I am not alone.

I just feel kind of sick whenever I see her in the press, or whatever. It’s just so gross…Doing nothing. Just being rich and “better now”…..Has she ever done one thing that was out of the kindness of her heart, or charity, or anything other than promote herself? I know she’s all for “chicks should rock”…..yea, well no shit….But dam, she could have done SO MUCH MORE with the power she had. She did nothing in any kind of humanitarian gesture. I am not saying that she is not talented, a great actress, funny, crazy smart, well versed, profound, and all the rest. Of course she is. But, she (way inside) is very, very sick. And it borders on an evil sickness that people with real feelings and an ability to feel BAD or sad have, and she, does not. She just runs on total mind, and power. But NOT heart or soul. You can hear nothing in her voice. Not even her scream. It is void.

I have a certain rage, and it’s now coming out. I’m not jealous at all of her though (ironically), omg, how could you be? she is SO loathed and hated. The karmic kick back with that woman is insane. I don’t feel at all sorry for her either. (How the fuck could you)? ….Back in the day, She had ALL the power. But she is not taken seriously now. People for the most part, know more about her. Even the young women and men who were her biggest fans. Many of them turned against her once they knew more about her. They grew up. She had a field day back when the internet was new and all the lies she would spread about me. She told people I killed her cat. She told stories upon stories on the internet (that old AOL Hole folder)…. (DOCUMENTED and downloaded to prove she did), countless grotesque lies that I could NOT stop her from spreading. I was not only was in fear of her, I was in fear of her fans. Countless times I would come out from a club, or the subway, and my car windshield would have been written on with lipstick “you suck”, or “fuck you” signed “Courtney. People would come up to me and say the most rotten things to me. Not even knowing me- All Courtney fans that were brainwashed by her or something……Then, the obvious forged fax, and the shit she said about me in Rolling Stone-The one where she was on the cover! Then, every time I looked on mtv etc….there she was. With people fawning and falling all over her. “The Princess” rock star. And all the while I KNEW how horrible she was as a person. She violated my integrity, she violated my life, she even left death threats to ME as well as my elderly parents on their answering machine causing a lot of stress and weird fear within our family. It was INSANE. Like having a gangster threaten you. Whitey Bulger or something. It was partially amusing because it was so nuts, but in the back of our minds, we were questioning “is she for real”. Will someone light our home on fire? etc etc…. In any case, made it hard to sleep at night. My parents were old and lovely, and didn’t deserve that. I felt like I had brought that pox with me -again, but not having ever done a single thing to deserve that…. I lived with my parents at the time….awful for them to have had to deal with that.

If she was just some random chick that was going around on her facebook or my space or something saying shit about another chick- that is one thing. But she was one of the biggest pop stars in the world at the time, and everyone loved her-the “grieving widow”, etc etc….so, the dynamic and the impact is a lot greater regarding the emotional toll , the incredible sadness, fear, and feeling of absolute powerlessness she made me feel. Knowing millions of people were reading her interviews, etc, and all the rotten things she was saying about me. All untrue. I was just a small town nobody busker who loved songs and friends, etc….and suddenly (very publicly), I was a fictional character she made up. She made me feel like a frightened child after she emotionally abused and violated me. She threatened me, she punched me, kicked me, chased me, and nearly had me killed that night on Sunset. And then, it continued until Kathleen and others got the guts to press charges when similar assaults happened to them. I should have pressed charges long ago. But I was too scared and didn’t want to bring any attention to it. I just wanted her to leave me alone. So, I carried this around with me for a very long time. I want to let it go, and I am letting it go now. I am letting it go publicly, just like she tore me apart with her lies publicly. I don’t know what could make a person be so cruel. I don’t understand that kind of person or that kind of thinking. Anyway, thank you for listening. And again, some of you have asked me about the Cobain “case” etc, and what I think about it, etc…..I don’t really have much to say about it. It’s not my place to say anything. I have no idea what happened. All I know is that they were two very sick people at the time. Sometimes I wonder if her particular kind of sickness was just plain dark sociopaths narcissism. Or, if there is such a thing as evil. And him, just a guy that loved music and wanted a family, and loved his daughter, but maybe couldn’t take it any more.
Anyway, thank you for reading (whoever you are), and I’m sorry this is long and self indulgent or whatever. It’s weird because I’m talking about people that you guys actually are aware of. I’m not saying things like….”in the past my ex Bob was a real prick”. I am talking about two of the most known people in the world….This was also very difficult for me because it wasn’t something easily forgettable when it’s either her face or his face on mtv or a t shirt or whatever, or when your daughter is a 17 year old Nirvana fan with curious questions that any kid would have……..It takes a lot to let it go. Thank you all for giving me some place to put these feelings that have haunted me from the past. I’ve needed some kind of validation for so long. Not just a “Oh, not this fucking story again” . I know how lucky I am and how lucky I have been to have even had the chance to be friends with some of the wonderful people I’ve been friends with.

It’s also tough, and weird, and weird in that shortly after Kurt died, I met Elliott. He never judged me, and he provided a sense relief and understanding to me, and he understood. He made the loss a lot easier to take, and move on from. (Sorry, I know I am drifting here, but on top of the “Justice for K” and “Justice for E”….I get a LOT of messages from fans and people who are looking to me to provide answers, or something, and it mixes in, and is so fucking weird and sad to me)……anyway, then, he too, Elliott was gone. This was (as you can imagine), very, very hard. It was beyond comprehension. But he gave me a home for my feelings, and we shared a lot of them. He was like a little brother to me. .(you know what I mean you guys?) ugh. It’s been a lot. And hard to “just forget”, when the music is just as relevant today, and in my ears and heart as it was then. And it’s not even like I seek it out. I just hear it. Under my floor boards, my daughter’s friends . It was some of the best music ever made, and I was kind of in the middle of all of that stuff. More so of course with Elliott, but jesus, it’s been weird and hard. ….It’s hard to move away from it. Songs are different than pictures. They are invisible like ghosts, and always there. Impossible to “move on” you just have to “move different”. ugh….

And I know I am lucky with having the beautiful friends I have and of course, my daughter. I don’t want to keep reliving this. It was an incredibly difficult time in my life. When he died, we were all shattered. It was a hard time for us all.
Anyway, to finally wrap this up, I just want Frances to know that her father was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met.

I hope we all find peace (anyone who cares about this case, or Kurt, or even Courtney), and retain a certain amount of empathy , respect, and understanding towards one another. I would say forgiveness, but that one is too hard when it comes to her….

It’s also important that no matter what our differences are on any of the matters that relate to this, that we all can try our best to be real, to be tolerant, and kind. No one should ever live in the shadow of fear or have their voice or their story squelched or be made to feel outcast, or worse, like a liar. (Whatever situation it might be)…. It’s taken 22 years for me to get up the guts to just tell it all like this. I’m not trying to draw attention to myself (I don’t care about that….I love songs, you know that)…..I am simply bringing this massive chapter to a final close and letting this ghost free-for me, and for the others who were victimized and traumatized by this person who never deserved, nor should have had that kind of power. She did not deserve a person as kind and sensitive as he was, or the love that he most likely desperately tried to give her, in the hopes of getting love back. …All he wanted was a family, and a place to belong. ..Isn’t that what we all want? ..Thank you, and again, sorry this is so long. Ugh. I know, I know. xo

Kurt Cobain’s ex-girlfriend Mary Lou Lord wrote an open letter to Courtney Love on Facebook a few days ago, where she ripped Love and revealed that she backs Tom Grant, a Kurt Cobain murder conspiracy theorist and Courtney Love’s former private investigator.

“To Courtney and her sycophants and lemmings….

There is a very BIG difference between “Name Drop” and “clearing your name/history”….especially if this person/band/connection might be one of the things that will always haunt you by the fact this it is now still “a living, breathing, thing”…..and I will not go down without a fucking fight to set the record straight with that cunt. I honestly mean that. I HATE her, and why didn’t I say anything back then? I was too scared. And also, out of respect for Kurt’s daughter who was a child. But at one time, during the time I never said a word out of fear of a flame war with all her Courtney-tard followers. I just sat, silentely, and watched her lie about me (and everything and everyone else. She built her world, and manipulated other people’s lives by being the best LIAR and best actress in the world. Something that twisted and fucked with a lot of good people. …I know at this point, I really am far too old for this shit, but I know also, that even in my own small (and not famous or plastic life), I have just as much right to say NOW what I wanted to say then, but was too afraid of her, and her insanity, and in protecting my parents and loved ones. New Art Show Will Showcase Kurt Cobain’s Shoes

Beginning February 11, KM Fine Arts Los Angeles will display photographer Geoff Moore’s photos of items from Kurt Cobain’s vault that he shot for the book Cobain Unseen. The items include Cobain’s sneakers, a guitar with a Richard Nixon sticker on it, and a broken guitar.

The photographs also feature subtle references to Nirvana’s oeuvre, such as a heart-shaped box filled with broken rosaries. There are also several images of Cobain’s mangled guitars, scuffed by pick marks and marked by stickers.

Moore, a self-taught artist and film director working in Los Angeles, was recently featured in a benefit exhibition for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music curated by Dana Louise Kirkpatrick, Flea, and Gagosian director Deborah McCleod. See photos below, via ArtNet.

Former Mudhoney manager Bob Whittaker shared a memory on Krist Novoselic’s Facebook page in December following Scott Weiland’s death. He shared a previously untold story about Weiland meeting Kurt Cobain backstage at Stone Temple Pilots’ show at Seattle Arena on July 8, 1993.

“I remember in Seattle – Butthole Surfers opened for them? We were back stage to say hi to the band after the show = Gibby , King Coffee ETC – I was goofing around with Kurt – he jumped on my back and I took him into the #sonetemplepilots dressingroom. Security was going to toss us out – but Scott saw Kurt and rescued us.

I set Kurt down then Scott and Kurt talked at the deli tray table – a bit awkward at first – Kurt said ‘people tell me you sound like #Nirvana . You must owe me some publishing money then.’ Scott didn’t miss a beat and pulled out a crumpled sweaty $1 bill from his pocket and gave it to Kurt. Kurt took it, We all laughed and left. Frances Bean Cobain Releases Nirvana ‘In Utero’ Inspired Art

Frances Bean Cobain has released a new piece of art titled ‘Bone dust & pigs skin.’ The art has definite similarities with Nirvana’s In Utero artwork.

Frances Bean Cobain discussed Kurt Cobain and Nirvana in an April 2015 interview with Rolling Stone.

“I don’t really like Nirvana that much [grins]. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre [laughs]. The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in. But ‘Territorial Pissings’ [on Nevermind] is a fucking great song. And ‘Dumb’ [on In Utero] – I cry every time I hear that song. It’s a stripped-down version of Kurt’s perception of himself – of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.”

She also discussed meeting Nirvana’s surviving members. “It’s very weird how genes are. Dave [Grohl], Krist [Novoselic] and Pat [Smear] came over to a house where I was living. It was the first time [the ex-Nirvana members] had been together in a long time. And they had what I call the ‘K. C. Jeebies,’ which is when they see me, they see Kurt. They look at me, and you can see they’re looking at a ghost. They were all getting the K. C. Jeebies hardcore. Dave said, ‘She is so much like Kurt.’ They were all talking amongst themselves, rehashing old stories I’d heard a million times. I was sitting in a chair, chain-smoking, looking down like this [affects total boredom]. And they went, ‘You are doing exactly what your father would have done.’

But I was glad they came over [smiles[. It was a cool experience, like having a Nirvana reunion minus one. Except for his spawn.”

Kurt Cobain Once Confronted Scott Weiland: ‘People Tell Me You Sound Like Nirvana’

Dave Navarro Responds To Kurt Cobain Murder Conspiracy Theory

Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro responded to a fan who asked him what he thought about the Kurt Cobain murder conspiracy theory docudrama Soaked in Bleach. The film implies that Courtney Love had a role in murdering her husband Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in April 1994. Navarro called the film ‘a well made piece of fiction.’

Courtney Love wrote a Christmas letter to her late husband Kurt Cobain on Instagram last month:

“That Christmas moment in everyones lives that you never forget, the one that makes you feel on top of the world, where the greatest gifts are the loved ones you shared that moment with. Well this is mine, I’m grateful to have ever experienced that moment. Merry Christmas Kurt, the greatest true love I’ve ever experienced in my life. You gave me the gift that makes life worth living, our incredibly talented, loving, beautiful and gifted daughter Frances Bean Cobain. Merry Christmas Bean, love mom and dad ❤”

Courtney Love wrote an emotional note to her late husband Kurt Cobain on Instagram in August as well, with a picture of herself, Kurt, and daughter Frances Bean. Love wrote, “Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking..⁉⁉ God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime #lovehim.”

Noiseheads are a three piece band from Pensacola, FL, but are soon transitioning to Greensboro, NC. Alternative Nation hailed Noiseheads as “One of America’s most promising young rock bands,” and with catchy radio friendly hard rock tunes, Noiseheads may be one of those bands that will ensure the world that rock is still alive and well. The band is influenced by many of the greats such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana, but sound like no other. Dave Grohl once said the intensity that Kurt Cobain had in his voice sounded like he was grinding nails in his throat when he performed, and this comparison is also the only way to describe Nick Gray’s vocals, throw in a stellar rhythm section from Greg and Joe and yes it is true, Noiseheads is one of America’s most promising young rock bands, and they may just be a band that brings rock music back from the underground.  Noiseheads may be taking a bit of a break with the move, but have been busy recently, including releasing a video for their track “Fellow Man” in November.

Courtney Love Writes Christmas Letter To Kurt Cobain: ‘You Gave Me The Gift’

Courtney Love wrote a Christmas letter to her late husband Kurt Cobain on Instagram yesterday:

“That Christmas moment in everyones lives that you never forget, the one that makes you feel on top of the world, where the greatest gifts are the loved ones you shared that moment with. Well this is mine, I’m grateful to have ever experienced that moment. Merry Christmas Kurt, the greatest true love I’ve ever experienced in my life. You gave me the gift that makes life worth living, our incredibly talented, loving, beautiful and gifted daughter Frances Bean Cobain. Merry Christmas Bean, love mom and dad ❤”

Courtney Love wrote an emotional note to her late husband Kurt Cobain on Instagram in August as well, with a picture of herself, Kurt, and daughter Frances Bean. Love wrote, “Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking..⁉⁉ God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime #lovehim.”

Chris Cornell Talks ‘Glamorizing’ Of Scott Weiland, Kurt Cobain & Layne Staley’s Deaths

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell was recently interviewed by 105.7 the Point, and Alternative Nation has transcribed several quotes. The reporter asked Cornell if it blows his mind that he’s still here, especially with fellow Grunge icons Scott Weiland, Kurt Cobain, and Layne Staley having died.

“I don’t know, it’s hard to say. I guess the overall attitude ends up being that it’s a drug issue, but that’s kind of cloudy. I have other friends that are extremely talented musicians that died in different ways.”

He said he doesn’t blame the music industry for rock star deaths.

“What I’m getting at is if you go into a 12-step meeting in any city, and you count 75 people and you ask how many people are musicians, you’re going to get 2, and everybody else is going to be from every walk of life as you can imagine. The same as Scott Weiland’s mother crying, there are mothers crying who have lost their sons who are construction workers, mechanics, literally anything you can think of, and it’s happening every day. The only difference between a musician that’s famous, and that other kid, is we don’t talk about them on the radio, that’s kind of it. They’re not somebody that is a public personality that’s already been talked about for other reasons.”

“Then I also think there’s kind of a history of glamorizing a little bit the ‘dead guy,’ whether it’s a rock star or a famous actor. James Dean, he only made three movies, and he’s one of the best known actors of all time. Granted, I think everyone agreed that he was really talented, and he died in a sort of glamorous bad ass way, which was in a little race car on his way to a race, driving it himself. I think there’s something to the legend of that, and the story of that, but one of the things I’ve experienced over and over again, which I think is a way that people deal with it, particularly when it’s somebody that is already kind of celebrated for something, is that we kind of invent the idea that it was ‘predetermined’ I think. That’s where I get impatient with it, because if that’s the case, then it’s predetermined with every kid that ends up with a substance abuse habit, and dies from it.”

Cornell also discussed personal responsibility when it comes to an addict dying, not blaming hanging out with ‘the wrong crowd’ for death. Cornell said he sees it as a parental way of dealing with it, and that he doesn’t agree with blaming other people for the addict’s death. “I’m not saying that is entirely wrong, but if someone has the propensity to abuse alcohol or drugs, and if they didn’t meet the wrong sort this weekend, they’re going to meet another guy somewhere else, if you have that in you.”

He later said, “I don’t think that, at the end of the day, if a person really wants to get better, anything can stop them, and if a person doesn’t want to, they won’t. You can’t make them do it.”

10. Kurt Cobain – Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings

It’s basic, low-fi, and stripped down to the bare bones. It’s raw! The Montage of Heck soundtrack companion jumps straight into Cobain’s psyche. From the opening strumming and mumbles on “The Yodel Song,” to the ever-angelic, elongated, work-in-progress take of “Do Re Mi,” the album is a trip inside of Cobain’s creative process.

It feels exactly like you’re in the room with Kurt, as he’s practicing the chords, tuning the guitar, or just goofing off with one of his voices for comedy. In conclusion, Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings (Deluxe Ed.) is exactly what any hardcore Nirvana/ Kurt Cobain fan would love, to understand the creative process – along with the film, of Kurt Cobain. 8. Puscifer – Money Shot

While Tool fans anxiously await for what is becoming their version of Chinese Democracy, Maynard James Keenan kept rolling with Puscifer’s Money Shot. The video for the title track perfectly encapsulates the appeal of the album, bring a sense of attitude and heaviness, but juxtaposing it with the absurdity of Luchadores fighting in a bar.

7. Chris Cornell – Higher Truth

Chris Cornell went back to basics with Higher Truth, stripping away the Timbaland beats and synth found on 2009’s Scream. The album was very much in the same vein as his recent Songbook shows, with an adult contemporary stripped down sound that sounds very age appropriate. “Dead Wishes,” a song that analyzes the psyche of homeless people, is one of Cornell’s better tracks he has recorded in the last several years. 6. John Frusciante – Renoise Tracks 2009-2011

Some complained of 2015’s Trickfinger as underdeveloped and bare bones. Those tracks were made in 2007-2008 and it in the following years, 2009-2011 worked on these tracks and there is a supreme difference. With clips of audio from different media, it almost feels like a movie. It is awesome to see Frusciante progress like this and I can only imagine what his work sounds like today, the work he has been working on this year. He evolved a lot from Trickfinger to Renoise, what will the coming work sound like? Frusciante easily could become a hit in the underground electronic scene, he seems to take a lot of good element from those scenes and makes it exclusively his own. (Full review)

5. Eagles of Death Metal – Zipper Down

Zipper Down is their fourth studio album, and it has been seven years since the last. This time, original members Jesse Hughes (on the album cover referred to as Boots Electric) and Josh Homme (Baby Duck) do everything themselves without help from additional musicians, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The album hit the right spot immediately.

The first track, ”Complexity”, captures the spirit of EoDM: funky, uptempo and fun. ”Silverlake”, ”Got a Woman” and ”Got the Power” follow the same pattern, while ”I Love You All The Time” is a slower song that is, as the title suggests, full of love. ”Skin-Tight Boogie” is a groovy kind of rap, featuring Hughes’ girlfriend Tuesday Cross on backing vocals. 4. Foo Fighters – Saint Cecilia (EP)

Foo Fighters surprised fans last month with a new EP recorded in Austin, Texas. The eponymous “Saint Cecilia” kicks off the E.P. with the “comfort food” side of the Foos familiar in tunes like “Walk” and “Learn to Fly”, with layered vocals from Dave Grohl accompanying a country/heartland melody. “Sean”, the shortest and fastest tune of the release clocking in at 02:11, captures a pop-punk vibe in the verses punctuated by a simple chorus hook consisting of a noodly riff and shouts of “Sean!”.

“Savior Breath” fuses the Foos’ Washington D.C. hardcore punk roots with Motorhead; it’s one of the group’s heaviest songs, right up there with “White Limo” off of 2011’s Wasting Light. Dave Grohl’s solo is one of the most memorable out of his recent output. “Iron Rooster” is the slow acoustic ballad here, capturing a bit of a Pink Floyd-vibe in Dave Grohl’s vocals and loose guitar solos. 3. Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts – Blaster

Editor’s pick for best album of the year: Blaster was Scott Weiland’s first album of original material in 5 years, and he hadn’t lost a step creatively. On the album Weiland hit melodic highs, and his lyrics were as beautiful, dark, and abstract as ever. “Amethyst” is one of the album’s highlights, a throwback to Purple era Weiland, featuring Jeremy Brown’s greatest guitar solo on the album.

In the one of the album’s most powerful songs, “Parachute,” Weiland sang about seeing through the eyes of love: ‘Catch you when you’re fallin’/Even when you’re not/I’ll see you through the eyes of love/Even when you’re crawlin’/Even when you’re fallin’/I’ll be your parachute, hold you up.’ The song feels like a spiritual successor to “Dare If You Dare,” with a feeling of frenetic euphoria driving the ending.

“Circles” ended up being the bookend to Weiland’s discography with his death just a few weeks ago, and it will definitely end up going down as one of his most underrated tracks. The country tinged ballad has themes of love, desperation, but also a feeling of hope sprinkled throughout it. (Full review)

2. Marilyn Manson – The Pale Emperor

For this LP, the non-conventional approach at first seemed to convey a somewhat underwhelming experience, yet with time, a more detailed and expansive sound was revealed on tracks like “Warship My Wreck,” “Slave Only Dreams to be King,” and “The Devil Beneath My Feet.” The current singles are not the strongest released in his catalog, but still provides a heavy edge. In conclusion, The Pale Emperor is a significant milestone in Marilyn Manson’s musical career as he takes a step farther in a dark, melodic direction. (Full review)

1. Faith No More – Sol Invictus

Faith No More live reunions have been on and off since 2009, but the large gap of time between an official album release had lead the quirky, alternative rock community to borderline hopeless until more recently. Marked as their seventh album in the discography, Sol Invictus, clearly had a reputation to live up to.

On the album, Faith No More still have the means of creating enjoyable tracks that mediate between a mainstream sound and avant-garde. Although it is clear which songs will fall through the cracks with time, a few tracks plus the singles are deserving of high praise and allow this album to serve as a solid return to the rock world after eighteen years. Remembering 10 Grunge Legends We’ve Lost

As the holidays approach, I feel the overwhelming need to write this after the recent passing of Scott Weiland. We take for granted that our favorite musicians will always be there, but the truth is, life happens, and circumstances in their own lives change, and they are gone.

We’ve lost so many people from the 90’s grunge/alternative rock music scene, and we should not forget them as 2015 concludes, or ever for that matter. The gifts we’ve received from them will last forever, and I am grateful for that. My thoughts go out to their friends, families, and significant others as well, hoping they know the fans are still with them.

Drug addiction is such a hard thing to talk about, so I won’t, but I know all too well the impact it leaves on the living, as I lost my husband in 2010 to a prescription narcotic drug overdose. I then lost my father from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease just 4 days later. The sadness subsides, but never really goes away.

I’d like to take this time to remember those that I often think of and had a huge impact on my ‘alternative music days’ years ago, which I still listen to and love. I’d like to note that not all the artists listed below died of a drug overdose from addiction.

The biggest losses for me personally were Layne Staley and Mike Starr. Both were such talented musicians, and part of a musical phenomenon that still continues to this day, Alice In Chains. I previously wrote about the sound that Layne and Jerry Cantrell created when singing together, an unparalleled duo to date. Mike Starr played his bass guitar with unmatched aggressiveness.

Unfortunately, thinking about their deaths puts me into a depression, something I cannot explain. But I knew it was time to pull out the music again as I wrote this article, so I started playing Facelift, SAP, Dirt, Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains. I’m sure many of you have done the same when missing Layne, as for me the music is healing. Although the lyrics state something of despair, I find the opposite in their music, and it gets me back to living my life again rather being stuck in a state of depression.

This past August, I brought candles to the Layne Staley and Mike Starr annual vigil at the Seattle Center fountain. Every single person listed above (except for Scott Weiland) had a candle. We even had a candle for Layne Staley’s beautiful ex-fiance Demri Parrott, because the impact she had on so many people.

There have obviously been others that we’ve lost, but the ones listed above I either met in person, or saw live in Seattle. However, I can honestly say that I never got to see Scott Weiland live, but I have always loved the music of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver.

If you have a musician that you have loved and lost, and you haven’t listened to their music for a while, I urge all of you to find the albums, or CD’s, and dust them off and play them. I bet you will feel a sense of happiness in what they left behind, as I did with Layne and Mike.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and wish you joy and happiness into the next year. I also hope you remember the great music these artists have left behind.

Did Nikki Sixx Predict Nirvana’s Success?

Author Martin Popoff is a man who knows his heavy metal. All you’d have to do is check out his list long-and-winding list of books he has issued over the years, and especially, two of his recent books, ‘The Big Book of Hair Metal: The Illustrated Oral History of Heavy Metal’s Debauched Decade’ and ‘Kickstart My Heart: A Motley Crue Day-by-Day.’ Mr. Popoff was kind enough to answer some questions for Alt Nation, and as it turns out, in addition to being a metalhead, he also fancies his punk and alt-rock, to boot!

In the Crüe book, ‘Kickstart My Heart,’ there is a quote from Nikki Sixx
in which he recalls being able to tell that Nirvana was going to alter the
landscape of rock n’ roll around the release of ‘Nevermind,’ which I found
interesting.

Yeah, you always wonder how much truth there is to something like that, when
you’re looking back. I can’t remember the exact quote and I’m too lazy to look
it up, but there’s a significant difference about saying something like that
around ‘Bleach’ or around ‘Nevermind.’ I mean, I couldn’t care less if they were
going to alter the landscape or not, but I knew instantly the moment I heard
‘Bleach,’ that this was a cool, incendiary form of punky, heavy metal, and
there were things that Kurt was doing on the guitar there that by some
definitions were heavier than anything we’d heard out of any hair metal
band. Plus the vocals, the lyrics, I don’t ascribe too much of pontificating
about emotion or anger or intensity or energy on these things, but let’s
just say the overall vibe was of anarchy, of a need to retool metal. Grunge
was already a good three years old by the time ‘Nevermind’ was going to pop up
on big huge bad Geffen, home of the bad wind that was Guns N’ Roses.

Although you seem to write primarily about heavy metal, do you enjoy
alt-rock and punk, as well?

Definitely, although alt rock can mean a million different things. And so
can punk, I suppose, and the only punk that I really care about and am an
expert on is the original punk of 1976 to 1979. I know and love all of that
up and down, and I can see having a few punk books in me. And I do indeed
have a Ramones coffee table book coming out in the next few months. I’m
gearing up to write ‘Who Invented Punk?,’ having done a whole bunch of
research on that, and it’s a story I find fascinating. That will be the
companion book to my insane ‘Who Invented Heavy Metal?’ book out last June,
and I may even do ‘Who Invented Thrash?.’ Alternative rock, however? I just
get carsick thinking about that term. I’m more interested in the meanings
and the bands that fill up the spaces known as new wave and post punk.

After reading ‘The Big Book of Hair Metal,’ I felt like it was a good
companion piece to my book, ‘Grunge is Dead,’ as it sets the stage for what
happened in the ’90s in rock music and was interesting to read what was
going on concurrently in LA and Seattle throughout the ’80s and early ’90s.
I seem to think that for the most part, there is “good glam rock” (the early
to mid ’70s variety) and “bad glam rock” (the mid to late ’80s variety). Do
you agree? Disagree?

No, couple things here. First off, the first glam rock, as it existed in the
UK from about 1971 to 1974, really has very little to do with the LA glam
rock of the late ’80s. They basically just had the same name. And even
there, few people call hair metal “glam rock.” That music from the UK was all
over the board, and seldom heavy, except a little bit, Mott the Hoople,
Slade, and quite a bit, Sweet. The only thing they had in common was going
for an androgynous look, along with makeup. To me, the more interesting
comparison of good and bad is the quality of the originals from LA, wild
card Van Halen, but then not wild card, Ratt and Dokken, and then the
insipid nature of all the copycats through most of the rotten core of the
middle ’80s (especially Bon Jovi), and then, what somebody could do a whole
book on, the super high quality of the hair metal bands as they learned and
matured and even got influenced by their own distaste for the ’80s, but also
learning from grunge or other alternative forms of metal, stuff happening in
California like Jane’s Addiction and Faith No More, and made what I think
are pretty well, the best bank of hair metal albums, which arrived in 1992
1993, with 1992 being a particularly good year. Basically every crappy hair
metal band from the ’80s made some of their best music in the early 90s, and
then new bands like Love/Hate, Collision, Saigon Kick, I Love You, Liquid
Jesus, even people like King’s X, Skid Row. I think this is one of the great
unwritten stories of hair metal, how, once the pendulum swung to Seattle, a
bunch of bands in LA were making really good music.

According to your calculations, what were some of the most over-the-top
hair metal bands, songs, and videos of the ’80s? Could Vinnie Vincent
Invasion’s “Boyz Are Gonna Rock” be a winner of all three categories?

Sure, Vinnie Vincent, everybody talks about Nitro, although they forget how
really underground that was. Whitesnake, Warrant, Winger, always the
notorious “three W’s.” Even Guns N’ Roses. I really absolutely do not give them
a pass for being any better than any of the hair metal bands. They were
simply, and quite insipidly in a subcategory I called dirty hair metal, but
hair metal all the same. Firehouse, I also found particularly egregious. But
yes, of course, big poofy, almost misty looking hair, slow motion, shiny
everything, as many girls in the videos as guys, there are all sorts of
tropes.

Were you sad to see grunge and alt-rock exterminate hair metal, or was it
– to quote Salt-n-Pepa – “very necessary” at the time?

No, it absolutely was necessary. Everybody at the same time was getting
pretty disgusted with the prima donna behaviour, the hedonism, the overt
materialism, and just the watered-down copycat nature of all the new bands
coming along. I’m not one of these guys that found no value in hair metal,
or hated it, because I was metaller than thou. My attitude was always, if
you are a huge metal fan, the more dedicated and more obsessive a metal fan
you are, then why wouldn’t you like more metal, widen your net, and include
hair metal? In other words, Paul Baloff, maybe a metal poser is one that
sees a whole metal category and dismisses it…because you aren’t metal
enough! If you’re into metal, then you should like hair metal! I’m not
saying all of it, or any power ballads for that matter. But the fact of the
matter is that was music completely based around guitar-and some pretty
pyrotechnic guitar playing, when it came to solos. Pounding drums,
screeching, high vocals. There’s lots of metal content across that genre.
Still, there was total magic and excitement around grunge. I was living in
Vancouver at the time, which is satellite enough to Seattle, and buying all
of those early EP’s and albums by Green River, Soundgarden, Nirvana,
Mudhoney. But as I think back, I was still buying every other metal genre as
well, including hair metal, which, like I say, got a lot smarter at the turn
of the decade. But grunge, man, that was incredible. It was dangerous. It
was not verse/chorus. Songs could be short, long, a lark, majestic. You were
constantly being surprised.

How difficult is it to assemble the “day by day” type books you have
assembled on Ozzy, Iron Maiden, and now, Mötley Crüe?

I love this format, because it allows for a really clear, easy reading look
at the story, and an easy way to suggest connections to things like
competing bands, solo careers, personal lives, recordings, as you move
along. And with Mötley, there were so many interesting things to talk about,
given how crazy their lives were. But there was also lots of solo material
along the way, especially stuff coming from Nikki, so that’s all covered in
there as well, plus of course, Vince and Tommy. But I love the idea of
researching, unearthing, nailing down dates for this stuff, and then boom,
right there, putting an elucidating quote about that event. And people love
the fact that with this format, it’s a true coffee table type read, where
you can pick it up at any point, and be instantly interested, rather than
trying to figure out where you left off, or who these characters are in the
story. And then all the yummy photography, pictures of memorabilia, etc.,
further enhance the tale along the way. The Mötley book is just gorgeously
laid out, and every page. I think the word for it is sumptuous.

What are your thoughts on when the Crüe “went grunge/alt-rock” on their
1994 self-titled release?

That is one of Nikki’s favourite Mötley records, and I’m pretty sure it’s
Tommy’s favourite, and Mick likes it a lot as well. And in fact, its way up
there for me as well. Nothing will beat the magic and the magic times of
‘Shout at the Devil,’ but in terms of bravery, cool, pioneering production,
fat drums, just cool writing, yeah, I love that album. And I might be in the
minority, but I really like ‘Generation Swine,’ as well. I just like the fact
that they were fearlessly experimenting, and making some of their smartest
music. Because they really were a stupid band on ‘Theatre’ and ‘Girls, Girls,
Girls.’ It was basically kiddy metal, like the last two Twisted Sister
albums, at that point. It seems like although that album was viewed as a commercial failure
shortly after its release, it has garnered a cult following over the years.
Absolutely. It went gold, simply based on curiosity. But of course, changing
a lead singer is always a tough thing to do. Plus the timing was really bad.
It’d been a long time since the last album, even grunge at that point was in
a mature phase, and we were moving to things like hard alternative,
industrial metal, other electronic forms of music. 1994 was the nadir for
heavy metal, although the rest of the ’90s weren’t much of a picnic either.
But yeah, I instantly loved it, and still do.

Care to predict if Guns N’ Roses will reunite?

No, I couldn’t care less. Especially if the question is specifically
predicting if they will reunite. That’s all gossipy and amorphous and
rumour-milled like talking about sports. Pretty meaningless. The stats and
the scores is all that matters. Talking about who is better is just
insanity. I just really think those guys are the luckiest band on earth.
‘Appetite’ was a pretty good album, nothing more. I even like ‘Use Your
Illusion,’ those records, better, and even then, it’s hard to separate the
sort of miscreant personalities and all the stupidity from the music, and
just enjoy the music for what it is. But I think Love/Hate and Badlands, and
even Skid Row by the time of ‘Slave to the Grind’ were three and four times
the band Guns N’ Roses ever were. So I really couldn’t care less if they do
reunite and run around and play those songs. But I have to give them credit.
People often reduce them to one album. Sure, I won’t give that album nearly
the props everybody else does, but in terms of the material they put out, in
the space of not too, too long – which, again, time is clouded by ‘Chinese
Democracy’ – they did put out the equivalent of about five records worth of
material between ’87 and ’91. So they weren’t exactly slouches.

Fan Sells Kurt Cobain’s Personal Checkbook

You thought somebody selling Kurt Cobain’s cardigan he wore at Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance and a lock of his hair was as low as you can get? Think again. Somebody sold Kurt Cobain’s personal checkbook on eBay last night for $1,650.00. The auction’s description stated: “Up for auction is one of Kurt Cobain’s personal checkbooks from when he was living in Olympia, WA at his 114 N. Pear St apartment. The checkbook contains blank 3 slips (1 checking deposit, 1 saving deposit, and 1 savings withdrawal). Also included in the auction is what I believe to be a storage fee receipt for either Kurt’s storage space or practice space. Feel free to message me with any questions.”

Kurt Cobain’s vintage cardigan he wore on MTV Unplugged in 1993 was recently auctioned off for $137,500 along with a lock of his hair. Frances Bean Cobain has a creepy doll made with locks of her father’s hair, with the leftover hair being sold. Below is the description of the Cobain hair auction:

A lock of Kurt Cobain’s hair given to doll maker and comic artist Dame Darcy by Courtney Love. In a comic book style letter of authenticity, Darcy explains that in the 1990s she sold her handmade dolls in the back of her comic book Meat Cake. Love became a client and commissioned a doll for her daughter Frances using Cobain’s hair. This lock was the hair that remained once the doll was made. Accompanied by both a black and white and inked copy of the letter of authenticity.

A vintage green cardigan sweater worn by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1993. The Manhattan brand sweater is a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket, size medium. The sweater was obtained from a close friend of the Cobain family. A signed letter of authenticity and provenance from the Cobain family friend will be provided to the winning bidder.

Scott Weiland Talks Avoiding Kurt Cobain & Layne Staley’s Fate In Final Interview: ‘Live Fast, Live Long’

Garret K. Woodward has posted Part 2 of one of the final ever interviews with late Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland. In the interview, Weiland eerily talked about avoiding death.

Woodward asked him, “But you landed on your feet. Do you think about that, that you weren’t a victim of the 90’s like Kurt or Layne?”

Weiland responded, “Not at all. I surpassed that stage of music and that lifestyle, and live a whole different life now.”

He also discussed what advice he’d give a young version of himself getting into the music industry, “That the most important thing is writing songs, because without great songs, nothing can happen. Live fast, live long.”

He also discussed bipolar disorder, “Yeah, it’s something that’s so common. Most people that have it don’t even know they have it and people that know that they have it don’t want to be medicated for it because it’s not something like taking an aspirin for a headache. It’s something that is trial and error. It’s like throwing darts at a dartboard until you hit the bull’s eye and finding the right medication that works.”

He said today, he was a happy family man. “Happily married and also the stepfather of a great kid named Wolfie.”

Billy Corgan: ‘Scott Weiland, Kurt Cobain & Layne Staley Were The Voices Of Our Generation’

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has released a blog on Scott Weiland’s death on SmashingPumpkins.com:

“Having just woken to the news of this passing, I feel compelled to put pen to paper and pay my respects to Scott. And in that I will not pretend to know more than I know, or add some sad homily to how he loved his life. At least in that, may I now say he is undoubtably in the arms of grace and eternal love.

May I also offer my humble condolences to his family, friends, and band mates; who have, and are, suffering this great loss. For when anyone as vaunted leaves far too soon, we mourn all that might have been.

As any fan, I find myself reflecting on what I do have in my own treasure chest: in scarce moments where Scott and I spoke as contemporaries or competitors, and got to know each as people other past the footlights and shadows we were so busy casting to the world. It may seem trite in reflection, but I’d try to make him giggle when I saw that the manic whirl of the dumb parties we were at (in Hollywood, no less!) might be causing undue stress.

It was, I’d guess you’d say, my way of apology for having been so critical of STP when they appeared on the scene like some crazy, man-fueled rocket. And not only was the knight up front freshly handsome to a fault, but he could sing too! As any supreme actor gives a real and different voice to each character played.

It was STP’s 3rd album that had got me hooked, a wizardly mix of glam and post-punk, and I confessed to Scott, as well as the band many times, how wrong I’d been in assessing their native brilliance. And like Bowie can and does, it was Scott’s phrasing that pushed his music into a unique, and hard to pin down, aesthetic sonicsphere.

Lastly, I’d like to share a thought which though clumsy, I hope would please Scott In Hominum. And that is if you asked me who I truly believed were the great voices of our generation, I’d say it were he, Layne, and Kurt.

So it goes beyond tragedy to say it is we who lost them, and not the other way round…

Justin Bieber Is A ‘Fan’ Of Nirvana: ‘Kurt Wouldn’t Give Two F***s!’

Justin Bieber’s stylist Karla Welch recently spoke to Esquire about Justin Bieber wearing a Nirvana t-shirt to the American Music Awards.

“It’s not the first time he’s worn a Nirvana tee. We just have a nice collection of vintage tees, and then the tee he wore yesterday was actually Jerry Lorenzo’s from Fear of God. Jerry takes vintage tees and re-cuts them.”

Welch continued: “Of course he’s a fan of Nirvana. I think it’s so funny that all these people are up in arms. I’m sure Kurt Cobain would be like – I mean I can’t speak for him, obviously – but I don’t think he was so snotty or that he would diss anyone who appreciated his music. I think he understood that that is like the antithesis of music appreciation.

“It’s so funny. But you know, fans are fans!” she added. “Whatever you want to say about being pop, but I don’t think Kurt Cobain gave two fucks, and I don’t think Justin Bieber does either. You know what I mean?”

Kurt Cobain Solo Album Disappoints In First Week Sales

Kurt Cobain’s Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, a soundtrack accompaniment to the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck released earlier this year, sold 5,000 copies in its first week on sale. While sales were low, the album did chart well on Billboard’s soundtracks chart, hitting number 1. The album also debuted at No. 6 on Alternative Albums, No. 11 on Top Rock Albums and No. 121 on the Billboard 200.

I had the privilege of receiving and reviewing an advance copy of the upcoming Kurt Cobain album Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings album for Alternative Nation. It’s basic, low-fi, and stripped down to the bare bones. It’s raw! The album jumps straight into Cobain’s psyche. From the opening strumming and mumbles on “The Yodel Song,” to the ever-angelic, elongated, work-in-progress take of “Do Re Mi,” the album is a trip inside of Cobain’s creative process. It even features a track that easily could have been a Nirvana pop hit.

Sound collage experiments like “Montage of Kurt I” & II,” “Kurt’s Audio Collage,” “Scream,” and “Kurt’s Ambiance” provide a sonic representation of what was written in Cobain’s journals. This is where noise rock experimental influences like William S. Burroughs (Kurt had read Naked Lunch after getting it in a bookstall in London while on tour), Sonic Youth, and Scratch Acid are evident.

The spoken-word comedy bits like the satirical advertisement for the “Capitol Lake Jam Commercial,” “Rhesus Monkey,” “Sea Monkeys,” “Underground Celebritism,” as well as “Aberdeen,” and “Beans” show the foray of Kurt’s genius at work, merging music with comedy.

Instrumental pieces like “Reverb Experiment,” with its intense feedback, sounds like an end-type jam at a Nirvana gig, as well as a homage to the Melvins. “Retreat,” “Letters To Frances,” and “The Happy Guitar” show off other styles of guitar playing that Kurt didn’t show off in live performances with his band Nirvana. This is a new kind of Kurt Cobain, as you’ve never heard him before.

The album also features acoustic demos of 5 songs, that would later be released on subsequent Nirvana albums, both live, and in the studio (“Been A Son,” “Scoff,” “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle,” “Sappy,” “Something In the Way”).

Comprised from various early and raw cassette recordings made by Kurt alone, the soundtrack allows a rare, unfiltered glimpse into Cobain’s creative progression.

Track by Track

“The Yodel Song” – Starts off with a bit of mumbling, and then a chord progression, with mumbles/yodeling over the top. Recorded circa 1986 – 1988.

“Been A Son (Early Demo)”– Acoustic demo, with alternate lyrics, where Cobain first performs the song on guitar, and then performs the bass part.

“What More Can I Say?”– An acoustic/electric song, that was added in the limited theatrical re-release of the film in August 2015. Clocking in at 3 minutes, it’s a very formulaic song, and would’ve easily fit within the Nirvana repertoire in 1993/1994.

“1988 Capitol Lake Jam Commercial” – Cobain’s satirical and comedic take on the then-upcoming Capitol Lake Jam, using a multitude of voices. One was heard in “Beans” (the With The Lights Out Version), as well as another deeper voice.

“The Happy Guitar” is an instrumental that sounds like a theme from a 60’s television series set in Hawaii. This was first released on the Outcesticide bootleg series in 1994, under the title “Black and White Blues” (made by Bootleggers) albeit in inferior quality.

“Montage Of Kurt I” – Vocal experimentation featuring Kurt satirically talking about, among other things: Bong water, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and other weird vocal abnormalities. It ends with weird squeaks from baby toys and guitar/pedal feedback.

“Beans” – From a recording in 1987/1988. Cobain uses his “chipmunk” voice again, as also featured within the 1988 Capitol Lake Jam track, as well as others. First released on the Outcesticide III: The Final Solution bootleg, albeit in inferior quality. Released again in 2004, on With The Lights Out. This is a sonic upgrade, and could be an alternate take/mix of the “song.”

“Burn The Rain” – Speculated to be recorded somewhere from 1987 – 1988, as evidenced on the tape that: “she’s not home right now” part in the Montage Of Heck film, where this comes from. At this time, Kurt was dating Tracy Marander.

“Clean Up Before She Comes (Early Demo)” – An earlier take of the song, than the one released on With The Lights Out. From c. 1987/1988 based on research provided by www.LiveNirvana.com.

“Reverb Experiment” – An instrumental piece of guitar feedback/distortion, with an over-use of the Polychorus reverb effects pedal. It sounds like an ode to both his contemporaries (The Melvins and Butthole Surfers) as well as a homage to The Grateful Dead’s long exploratory “Space” segments of their later shows.

“Montage Of Kurt II” – Another spoken audio collage of everything from bong water, to pieces from what we knew as “Beans” (those voices were first heard in “Beans” (With the Lights Out,2004) although this is an extended version of said “skit.”

“Rehash” sounds like Henry Rollins era Black Flag thrash-style with a heavy guitar riff and heavy screams, while the chorus (Rehash, Rehash) doesn’t sound at all like Cobain’s regular vocals. It’s clearly an in-development idea, as Cobain recites where he wants the solo, by orally saying: “Solo” as he plays the riff, over and over again.

“You Can’t Change Me/Burn My Britches/Something In The Way (Early Demo)” – A 3-song segue, which Brett Morgen has described as a “Punk Opera.” It really is an epic, in every sense of the word. From the start of the verse of “You Can’t Change Me,” sounding very thrashesque, and then segueing into the grungy “Burn My Britches.” The segue then softly decrescendos to a slow, but heavy, version of “Something In The Way” (akin to the BBC version mixed with the Boombox Rehearsal version, if both didn’t have drums. (both versions were released on Nevermind 20th). This version of “Something in The Way,” sounds as if Cobain is close to tears (like the Boombox’s final verse/chorus segment).

“Scoff (Early Demo)” – A Quick run-through of what seems to be the first ever recording of the song, released later on, on the album “Bleach

“Aberdeen” is the story of Cobain rehearsing his narrative of story-telling; a story about having sexual intercourse with a mentally disabled girl in his early teens. This has been disproven as being a true story by Buzz Osbourne, Kurt’s close friend and mentor in his early days of playing music, and was only another example of his dark sense of humor.

“Bright Smile” – Cobain uses his falsetto voice here to sing this almost 2-minute song, with an electric guitar underneath the vocals. The lyrics “Bright smile” are repeated throughout until the final “Smile” is yelled at the end.

“Underground Celebritism” – A short 28-second audio snippet of Kurt rhyming off about “underground celebration” which seems to be about not selling out, while he plays a little riff underneath the vocals.

“Retreat” – A 2-minute instrumental piece, with Cobain’s vocals breathing to end the track.

“Desire” – A standout acoustic number, running at 2 minutes and 27-seconds long. If this was worked on anymore, it could’ve been a hit. With the leading chorus of “Desire” repeated twice, and the riff afterwards before the second verse, it could’ve been another poppy acoustic hit.

“And I Love Her” – An acoustic rendition of the Fab Four’s ’64 hit. Recorded approximately in late 1993/early 1994.

“Sea Monkeys” – Spoken word audio of Kurt talking about Sea Monkeys…. Tower Records… and Paula Abdul.

“Sappy” – A new upgraded mix, from the version that was released unofficially on the “Outcesticide” bootleg series. A raw, stripped, acoustic version of the song that would eventually end up, electrically and more Nirvana-ized on the No Alternative Compilation in 1993.

“Letters To Frances” – A bright, and mellow 2-minute instrumental piece, written for his daughter, alternating from light strums, to a heavier strumming pattern/tone near the end.

“Scream” – A 32-second montage of wails layered with static, with Kurt using a pitch-shifter at the end for his screaming.

“Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle”
– An acoustic 4 minute demo of the In Utero track, with some alternate lyrics.

“Kurt Ambiance” is just what one would believe it to be. It’s nothing more than static through the cassette player.

“She Only Lies” – A haunting song, with dark lyrics alluding to guilt and self-condemnation, along with shame towards the other person. This could’ve easily been another song by Nirvana, with such a great bass-line.

“Kurt Audio Collage” – A 24-second audio collage of birds chirping, water flowing, and some signal interference near the end.

“Poison’s Gone” – An acoustic song clocking in at 2 minutes, with similar subject matter to “She Only Lies.”

“Rhesus Monkey” – One more of Kurt’s spoken word comedy skits, using various voices.

“Do Re Mi” (Medley) – The grandiose finale of the Deluxe Edition, of one of Kurt’s final recordings (recorded just 3 weeks before his death). By the end of the take, at over 10 minutes, Kurt’s voice is shrill, and cracking.

For historical value of the insight into Cobain’s process of crafting songs from his early, pre-Nirvana days, to his final months, this is essential listening for any fan of Cobain, as well as anyone whom may be a fan of Nirvana.

Verdict:

I’ll definitely be listening to this, not just for historical value, but as it was intended: as a way to get inside Kurt’s mind and listen how he composes songs the way he does. It feels exactly like you’re in the room with Kurt, as he’s practicing the chords, tuning the guitar, or just goofing off with one of his voices for comedy. In conclusion, Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings (Deluxe Ed.) is exactly what any hardcore Nirvana/ Kurt Cobain fan would love, to understand the creative process – along with the film, of Kurt Cobain. 5/5 Stars.
