Thanks to Van Conner for letting me know about this. Gary Lee Conner, the former guitarist of the Screaming Trees, is releasing new music under the Microdot Gnome pseudonym on Van’s Strange Earth Records. Here are two new songs from the project:
“Low Flying Bird” definitely has that classic rock Screaming Trees vibe, the guitar tone sounds like where you might expect the Trees to have gone after Last Words. “Julian Hades” goes a bit away from the Trees type darker sound, with a big influence from the poppy 60’s rock of The Beatles/Simon and Garfunkel/The Beach Boys with piano and other keys apparent in the song. The melody is very soothing, Conner sounds straight out of the 60’s. This sound really expands on stuff like “Sworn and Broken” where you saw the Trees go into a mellower/poppier direction. Definitely a must listen for Screaming Trees fans.

After ten years of shaking the corporate rock slime from his boots, former Screaming Trees guitarist Gary Lee Conner has emerged unfazed on the other side and is ready to throttle this spooky action known as the Microdot Gnome to the ends of eternity. Now holed up on a small compound in central Texas, Gary Lee began to revisit the mind-bending rock that made him well known around the world in Screaming Trees. In addition to showing off his guitar work, Gary Lee has added mellotron, harpsichord and brass instruments create a soundscape that may at times seem reminiscent of the Screaming Trees 1996 release Dust. The Microdot Gnome first signaled their existence in 2010 with the self-released album 4D Sugarcubes, and now here on Strange Earth Records the Microdot Gnome is embarking on a journey through the light years towards a time all its own. Come on along for the ride.
Stars are born and die. Strange forms of life emerge. Time and space bend back upon themselves. In quasar-like experiments super intelligent races evolve new universes and turn their backs upon the old. In this fusion of infinite past, present and future you will come upon the MICRODOT GNOME.
