Pantera’s Phil Anselmo Fancies Morrissey: ‘His Talent Is Magical’

While yours truly was interviewing former Pantera singer Phil Anselmo for the Songfacts site (on thi), the subject of his favorite all-time songwriters came up, which Morrissey was one of several selections. The conversation then took the following turn:

Songfacts: I was surprised to learn you are a fan of The Smiths.

Phil: I adore them. Brutally honest band. Tongue-in-cheek humor, dark humor. Excellent musicianship, excellent songs.

And really, Morrissey is a phenom. It’s like, “Where did this guy come from?” And, “Did he always just have this crooning talent?” It’s pretty magical, if you ask me.

Songfacts: Have you ever met Morrissey?

Phil: No. This past time in New Orleans, a couple of weeks back, he played here. Somebody knew somebody who knew somebody, and word got back to me. I guess the kind way to put it was, “I would be slightly disappointed were I to meet him.” It would be like meeting David Lee Roth and having him dick you off or something. Nobody wants that – to have their idols be in a bad mood. And I’m not saying that would be the case, but if you hear that “Morrissey is not receiving company this evening, and won’t be,” then that’s all you need to hear. So no, I haven’t met him.

In addition to admiring the music of the Smiths and Morrissey, Anselmo feels equally as strongly about obscure horror movies, and from November 13-15, 2015, the third edition of his Housecore Horror Festival will take place at the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio, Texas. Find out more info about the festival here, and read the rest of the interview here.

Phil’s fucking awesome. So is Morrissey. So are The Smiths. The end.

  • Corndog

I’ll never understand the love for Morrissey or The Smiths. They’re absolutely awful IMO. His voice is like nails on a blackboard. Can’t stand his whiney lounge singer style.

    • Mark Bircher

Says the fan of Pearl Jam…

      • Corndog

That’s correct, but irrelevant. The Smiths are still going to be shite whether I’m a Pearl Jam fan or not.

    • Thelonious Funk

Says the devoted Scott Weiland fan who hates America and worships a band who’s spent the better part of their career emulating The Who. If you can’t understand the greatness of a lifeforce like The Smiths, then there’s really no hope for you. Might as well evacuate

      • Corndog

“Says the devoted Scott Weiland fan who hates America”?? Are you sure you’ve got the right guy buddy? I have no particular love for Scott Weiland. Sure, the guy had a pretty good voice 20 years ago, but i have never been more than a casual fan of STP, and don’t listen to his solo stuff at all. There are even a couple of STP albums i’ve never heard, and the ones i have get played rarely. Now, given my comments on this board over the years, had you said ‘devoted Eddie Vedder fan’ that would have at least made some sense.

As for the hates America Part? Umm, seriously, Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot?? Where the hell are you getting your information from? No clue where this is coming from. I have nothing against America. That’s where all the cool stuff comes from! The only comment i have ever made about America on this site was about how i think their gun laws are crazy, and i stand by that; they are. Really baffled by this comment….

If the worst thing you can think to say about Pearl Jam is to point out that they have been inspired by one of the greatest rock bands of all time then i really don’t think they have anything to worry about…

“If you can’t understand the greatness of a lifeforce like The Smiths, then there’s really no hope for you. Might as well evacuate”. Jeez, drama queen much? I’m not going anywhere mate. You’ll just have to learn to live with the fact that there are folks out there that recognise that Morrissey and the Smiths are shite. I don’t see that you should have a problem with that though. Personally, i really couldn’t care less what you or anyone else thinks of Pearl Jam. How the individual feels about the music they like is the important thing, not how others feel about that music.

        • Thelonious Funk

          tl;dr

          • Corndog

Explain yourself. Your post made zero sense because I don’t particularly like Scott Weiland, and I have nothing against America. No idea where you’re getting your info from, but it’s bullshit.

          • Thelonious Funk

Check that headline story from the 4th of July about Blink, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins celebrating Independence Day. I pretty much map it out for everyone there

          • Corndog

Yeah, checked that story. Your comment still makes zero sense. You’ve just randomly decided that I hate America and like Weiland for some bizarre reason. Neither of which is remotely true.
As I said in my other post, the only thing I have ever even said about America here is that their gun laws are crazy and I stand by that, because they are. How you make the bizarre leap to interpret that as my hating America, I just can’t fathom, and Fuck knows where the Weiland stuff comes from. I’m constantly mocking him here by claiming he’s an imposter and the real one is locked in the Deleo’s basement.
If you’re going to be an asshole, at least get your facts straight.

          • Thelonious Funk

Don’t sweat it, dude; I’ve put up with people hating on Americans my whole life. One more guy out on the internet isn’t going to break the rhino’s back, so to speak.

          • Corndog

Are you intentionally missing the point? I don’t hate America or Americans. I disagree with your gun laws, hardly the same thing. Are you saying then, far as you’re concerned any disagreement of any sort is automatically interpreted as hatred?
Where did the Weiland stuff comes from? Genuinely curious about that. I’ve no love for that guy.

          • Thelonious Funk

I’ve seen you champion Weiland more than once on AN. “STP were the heir apparent to Pearl Jam in their day”, I believe were your words?

And I still don’t understand why you can’t understand our guns laws. You’re basically saying that Americans are a bunch of crazy sods who just want to shoot the place up with guns they can easily purchase, and that’s hateful.

It’s not as easy to just “go buy a gun” here like you presume to think. Try living here before you judge, even though we welcome judgement in America. We’re used to the outside world hating our guts and being jealous of our freedoms and calling us “fat pigs” and “arrogant twats” and yadda yadda yip yang yo.

            Get over it

          • Corndog

No, no you haven’t. I’ve never ‘championed’ Weiland and I most certainly never said those words. Heir apparent to Pearl Jam?? They aren’t even close to Pearl Jam. I did NOT say that nor have I ever even thought it! There is no heir to Pearl Jam; there is only, Pearl Jam!
I don’t particularly like the guy and generally just mock him. You’ve clearly got me mixed up with someone else.
As for your gun laws, stop putting words in my mouth – that really seems to be your deal huh – I’m not saying anything of the sort. I simply believe that no country should allow firearms to be sold in stores. Coming from a country where guns have caused incredible suffering I personally believe there are no circumstances where they should be available to the public at all; barring the zombie apocalypse.
You get over it. And like I said, try to get your facts straight, and stop saying I said things which I never have.

      • StoneToTheBone

Says the jackass who likes Kayne. What are you doing on this site anyway? shouldn’t you be on another site worshipping your faux master? Just saying.

        • Thelonious Funk

Likes Kanye? I can’t stand that guy. Lol where are you getting that from?

Is this that Junior More guy under a fake alias?

          • Corndog

I know right? Irritating when some dude you don’t even know starts making erroneous claims about you…..
I saw that post last night, and though that given what you’d said to me it was ironic as obviously you don’t really like Kanye because, you know, only his mother actually does…
Or maybe you do? Hell if I know. I don’t know you.

          • Thelonious Funk

Actually, I went back and checked and…you’re right. I DO like Kanye.

“THIS THAT PRIME SHIT! THIS THAT CLOTHES ON THE FLOOR DON’T TELL YOUR MOM SHIT!”

            Uh like it uhlot

          • Corndog

i’m not normally a violent person, but i’d happily suspend that policy just long enough for the chance to punch him right in his stupid smug consta-pout face.

    • StoneToTheBone

I actually agree with you on this one, I can’t for the life of me understand the love for the Smiths. His voice annoys me, I tried to listen to them but I just can’t get over that voice.
