Jimmy Chamberlin Calls Former Smashing Pumpkins Bandmate Billy Corgan ‘One Of The Greatest Songwriters Of All Time’

Former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin praised his former bandmate Billy Corgan in a new interview with HotPress:

“I applaud Billy’s efforts moving forward”, he says. “For him, the Pumpkins represents the holistic view of his life and it’s right for him to carry on with the brand and it’s right for him to continue to make new music. I’m a big cheerleader for him. In fact, I went over and listened to the new record he just finished with Tommy Lee and it’s fantastic. It’s nothing less than what you’d expect from one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I’m excited for where the band’s gonna go.”

Pressed a little, Chamberlin looked back fondly on what he and Corgan accomplished together.

“Like any divorce, during the initial detachment period things got murky, but as the water clears you can go back and look at that time with the reverence it deserves. The stuff we did together was untouchable. I think it’ll live on forever…”

Billy Corgan told AlternativeNation.net last month that his relationship is solid with Chamberlin, “My relationship with Jimmy is great, we talk here and there. As far as playing together, I don’t know, I think we’re kind of happy to not have that be part of the equation of our relationship at this point. In essence, we can have a relationship without the stress of the band, or a musical relationship on top of it sort of altering the dynamic. I know he’s in a great place, he’s been out lately with this company he’s working with, I know he’s very excited about that. He’s such a smart guy, most people don’t realize how brilliant Jimmy is as not only a musician, but as a person. So I don’t know, I’m so much in the moment. I get the gist of those questions, and the general interest in those types of questions, but right now I’m just so focused on getting the new album out, and how to tour it and all of that.”

Jimmys seems like a great guy, quite the wholesome fella. Hes right about ol’ Billy Pumpkin’s songwriting ability, say what he will about the guys flaws and his obviously enormous ego but hes the best songwriter of his generation in my opinion.

Nice user name! I also concur, the various whining and endless harping can become annoying, but based on songwriting alone, no one from the 90s has been as inventive and worth listening to, and thats saying something.

    That made my day.

If Billy Corgans so great, why doesn’t he take his band The Smashing Pumpkins to 8 different citys in the USA and record 8 wonderful songs ? Then document the whole thing for an HBO cable tv special 🙂

    Sound familiar? hehehe 🙂
