Guitarist Breaks Silence On Guns N’ Roses Reunion

Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus briefly discussed the reunion of the band’s original members Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan with a fan on Facebook yesterday. While Rose, Slash, and McKagan are confirmed to be part of GNR’s 2016 lineup, no other members have been confirmed yet. Many rumors have stated that Fortus, drummer Frank Ferrer, and Dizzy Reed will remain with the band, even with Slash and McKagan’s returns. Other rumors have stated that Matt Sorum will be the drummer, and others have said that the original lineup featuring Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin will reunite.

Fortus reportedly reacted to the reunion news and rumors of him being involved yesterday by saying to a fan, “Really!?  Man, I sure hope so!  That’d be awesome.”

As we have been reporting for months, the reunited Guns N’ Roses will be headlining the Coachella festival in Indio, CA in April 2016. Billboard confirmed our reports earlier today, also reporting that the band will play the new Las Vegas Arena, which is set to open in April. Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan so far are the only confirmed members.

Alternative Nation has learned that Guns N’ Roses will announce additional United States stadium tour dates in late January 2016. We previously reported on December 1st that around 25 dates were planned, and this still appears to be the case. A show at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (where the New York Jets and New York Giants play) is reportedly in the works.

Consequence of Sound
is reporting that Matt Sorum will be the drummer, but there have been many contradictory reports, with Frank Ferrer even hinting at his own involvement, and Steven Adler publicly lobbying for his job back just a couple of months ago.

You know what REALLY gets me about this whole Gn’R reunion craze?

What the fuck is going to happen to Axl’s Chinese Democracy-era Guns n’ Roses? And I’m not talking about the band members here.

Axl spent 17 years — 17 YEARS! — between the last album of original Guns material and CD’s release. Guys close to the band or at one point in the band like Sebastian Bach, DJ Ashba and Ron Thal have gone on record saying there are at least three more albums’ worth of original material just waiting to be released from the Chinese Democracy era.

And if the original members are now in fact back in the fold, are they really going to play any of the CD stuff? If they were to agree to record new material together as a band, would any of them even bring up the idea of retooling the stuff Axl’s already got in the hopper?

How many tens of millions of dollars and years of his life did Axl burn through slaving over all this CD-era Guns material that will now just sit on a hard drive somewhere? How much blood and sweat went into legitimizing the CD-era of Guns, just so a couple of original members can return to ensure virtually nobody gives a shit about the Chinese Democracy Guns n’ Roses..

None of the CD songs are going to be played on the reunion tour, you can almost guarantee that. And it’s highly doubtful Slash and Duff are going to want to have a crack at long-rumored and long-unreleased Guns tracks like ‘Silkworms’ or ‘The General’

I guess what I’m trying to say here is…what a fucking waste all that was.

I agree. I don´t think this line up will play songs from Chinese Democracy under any circumstances. Like Frusciante refused to play songs of Dave Navarro era in RHCP.

The question is…somebody are gonna miss that songs?. I don’t think so. Maybe the Axl ego wants to force play that songs, but at this point all the “ego stuff” must be talked and solved. Its like expect songs from Velvet Revolver. Its not gonna happen.

      • Felonious Punk

That’s only because Dave’s playing on OHM and everything else he’s ever done actually takes some skill, whereas Frusciante just plays that same bland guitar-noodling style all the time. He couldn’t light Dave’s cigarettes properly, let alone play his stuff, if you want my personal opinion.

        • ITURBIDE

Thats true. I see Frusciante more like a very talented composer than a very skilled player. I like his style, but its annoying that the live versions are never like the recorded songs.

honestly, I will be very surprised if this “reunion” of whoever is going to rejoin Axl will go any further than playing some festivals and a world tour… i believe this is a one time thing of 1 tour so people can witness slash and axl, and whoever else from the past onstage together again for 1 last time. for the fans who never got the chance to see them. then, they will call it a day,… slash will continue his solo stuff, and the other guys will continue doing what they do, and axl will then reform GNR again to finish off his CD era stuff, then retire. if slash and axl and duff etc. actually record new music, now THAT would be a fucking miracle in my eyes…. but i truly believe this is just going to be a 1 time only tour, and thats it…. and they are going to make a shit load of money doing this in 2016/17.

I don’t even care anymore at this point. Did I ever, even? All this talk about Slash and Duff coming back and now suddenly it’s a Guns reunion worth $3 million a show and $250 a ticket?

It’s a Guns hybrid lineup. Axl’s loyalists along with the two other most identifiable classic-era members to increase the market price. I highly doubt Axl and Slash and Duff are all in the same room together because they genuinely want to play Guns songs together again.
