It was the vets against the new rockers on the block at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, as the Foo Fighters, the Black Keys and Mumford & Sons faced off against Foster the People and Cage the Elephant for Best Rock Video. Foo took home the prize, and delivered an impassioned defense of rock music along the way.

Miley Cyrus and Shawn White were on hand to bestow the Moonman on Dave Grohl and company, whose “Walk” video bested the Black Keys’ “Howlin’ for You,” Cage’s “Shake Me Down,” Foster’s “Pumped Up Kicks” and Mumford’s “The Cave.”

“We’d like to thank Sam Jones, the director; Joel Schumacher, the director of ‘Falling Down,’ which was the movie we based the video on; and all our friends at MTV,” Grohl said during his acceptance speech. “I just want to say: Never lose faith in real rock and roll music, you know what I mean? Never lose faith in that. You might have to look a little harder, but it’s always going to be there.”

The win for “Walk” proved to be something of an MTV awards-show full circle for the Foos, who busted out the tune off their album Wasting Light during a hard-charging in June.

I like “Rope” better, but I still LOVE the Foos & Grohl and I am glad they won it.

Not that it matters in the whole scheme of things, really. It’s just nice to see someone I like & follow win an award every now & again.

Also….does anyone find it funny that Miley Cyrus gave the Foos their award?? Especially after her horrible rendition of Smells like Teen Spirit?? LOL Irony at its finest.

  • what ta fack

Im not a fan of the Foo Fighters but Dave is just to awesome.

  • PiE

LOL..Mumford & Sons, Foster the People and Cage the Elephant representing ‘rock’.

  • SIN

I think that was a very good moment, it showed the other younger celebrities giving their respect to them, I really liked that they showed Brian May nodding in approval at his Rock & Roll statement. Kudos to you Dave, good job.

I’m telling you, they must have been so uncomfortable at that show (who wouldn’t?). With that freak Lady Gaga demanding everyone stand up and applaud Britney Spears. Dave Grohl applaud Britney Spears? I am sorry the band had to watch the likes of Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, and the rest of the pop misfits. But this was a victory, albeit small, for all that is good in the world.

What does MTV have to do with Music? It’s like te Foos winning the best rock song at the Comedy Central Music Awards! But, good for the Foos. Walk is one of my favorite Foo songs.

  • AJMajesticals

I hate to say it (cause I actually really like the Foos) but this “award” was given to the best mediocre video out of a whole list of mediocre videos (and a few mediocre artists might I add). Rock may still be here (somewhere, hiding) but it certainly doesn’t have influence it once did, when are we gonna get back to that?

  • Grungy

Foos win by default at the emmys, I mean Mtv thing awards.
Mtv had a thing years ago where they played videos and even help the whole movement. If Nirvana started now I wonder how Mtv would of used them?

  • The Incredible Mr. Mark Arm

vma’s are next to shit, i didn’t watch that fuck

  • Grungeluv

    That was awesome XD

  • Pete

Watching the VMA’s? Are you guys 12 year-old girls?

Even though this award ceremony is no longer relevant, what I mean by that is look at all the nominees and performances this year compared to 1996, thank God they took the win. The other bands that were nominated were rock? I can see maybe Cage The Elephant. I can’t stand the sound of the Black Keys and never heard of Mumford or whatever they are. The VMAs have been a joke for at least the past decade. It used to be so diverse with not just pop and rap but with rock too. Last night show was nothing but POP artists. I remember performances by Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, White Zombie, The Cranberries, Live, etc. The show was much better in the 90s when I actually thought it mattered.
