Kurt Cobain’s Ex-Girlfriend ‘Received Death Threats’ From Courtney Love

Yesterday, we reported on Kurt Cobain’s ex-girlfriend Mary Lou Lord unloading on Courtney Love in a Facebook post. When went even more in-depth on a second post:

“I just wanted to thank you guys for being cool and tolerating my ranting

about CL over the last few days. Something did indeed spark it…but I’m trying to let it all go now. A lot of you (old friends), were right there with me in the middle of this black tornado’s thrust, and I know it effected you too. It was a very weird and sad time for so many of us. For those of you who were there, this is for you too. I know your feelings aren’t that far removed. And although we don’t see each other much these days, know I love you.

I know this is long, and boring….and yes, it is public. It’s just as public as the VERY public (in print, etc) , kick in the guts she gave me over an extended amount of time, and extended amount of threats. One, that has been a long time getting over, and one, that’s been a long time letting go of. Everyone should be able to have their day where they say exactly what they have wanted to say to someone who violated them. I’m most likely never gonna write a book, and if I suddenly croak, I want to finally have my say and my voice heard on this. Not hers. Mine.

I’ve mentioned things here and there, but out of respect for Kurt and Frances, I never fully publicized ALL my feelings on this subject. No kid should have to read shitty things said about their parents. Especially when they are unable to understand or formulate their own opinions. Also, in the past, when I did say a few things here and there, it was FOR Frances if she had ever read what Courtney herself said about me concerning Kurt. What Courtney said, was actually a put down to her own husband. Those of you who know what I am talking about will understand what I mean. I said it in defense OF Kurt. He was NOT that kind of a guy who would do that. I wanted Frances (if she had ever privately read it), to know that. -That was one of the other incredibly disturbing aspects of Courtney’s lies. How it was also a total defamation of Kurt’s character within the context of her lie, and her wording. Printed in Rolling Stone, just weeks after he had died, when SHE was on the cover. And of course, Hole’s Live Through This, was #1. And, for weeks after this, it was HER not ME who was bringing attention to any involvement I might have had with him. I felt like a dork. I NEVER brought it up in interviews. It was her who planted any of the fucked up attention it got to begin with. I just wanted to hide and cry.

In the past, I let (or, I thought I had), let it go. I guess that for some reason there was still a part that I hadn’t let go of. Anger is shitty. Anger over something that happened 22 years ago. It might have something to do with these movies coming out, and having to partially re-live a feeling that never really went away. Or, was dormant. Seeing her or even hearing about her, kind of jolts me into anger. Why now? I dunno. Why do some people who got violated by priests, or hurt decades prior suddenly have the need to come forth and tell their story? I was absolutely emotionally violated by her, and it hurt me more than anyone will ever know. The defamation, the lies, and the spin off of that. Having to deal over the years with fans of hers who hated me for something that was not true to begin with. They clung on her every word, every move. Also, I was petrified of her. I feared for my life. There was no way to fight back-she was too powerful and no one would have believed me(trying to fight her lies), nor, would they have given a shit. I was a no-one. I still am pretty much a no one in comparison with her, but I am much more fearless now. I suppose, in a way, it’s similar to how years later when people are grown up, and if they were abused, and had to remain silent, they finally confront a pedophile priest or abusive person that is now old, and elderly, and broken. To finally confront a person who scared the living shit out of them, as well as abused them either emotionally, or physically. It IS a relief. It really is. I don’t look at her with pity really, (she is more beautiful than ever, and seems happy, etc)….But I feel like I can finally speak out because I am not alone any longer. People don’t believe her. I am not alone.

I just feel kind of sick whenever I see her in the press, or whatever. It’s just so gross…Doing nothing. Just being rich and “better now”…..Has she ever done one thing that was out of the kindness of her heart, or charity, or anything other than promote herself? I know she’s all for “chicks should rock”…..yea, well no shit….But dam, she could have done SO MUCH MORE with the power she had. She did nothing in any kind of humanitarian gesture. I am not saying that she is not talented, a great actress, funny, crazy smart, well versed, profound, and all the rest. Of course she is. But, she (way inside) is very, very sick. And it borders on an evil sickness that people with real feelings and an ability to feel BAD or sad have, and she, does not. She just runs on total mind, and power. But NOT heart or soul. You can hear nothing in her voice. Not even her scream. It is void.

I have a certain rage, and it’s now coming out. I’m not jealous at all of her though (ironically), omg, how could you be? she is SO loathed and hated. The karmic kick back with that woman is insane. I don’t feel at all sorry for her either. (How the fuck could you)? ….Back in the day, She had ALL the power. But she is not taken seriously now. People for the most part, know more about her. Even the young women and men who were her biggest fans. Many of them turned against her once they knew more about her. They grew up. She had a field day back when the internet was new and all the lies she would spread about me. She told people I killed her cat. She told stories upon stories on the internet (that old AOL Hole folder)…. (DOCUMENTED and downloaded to prove she did), countless grotesque lies that I could NOT stop her from spreading. I was not only was in fear of her, I was in fear of her fans. Countless times I would come out from a club, or the subway, and my car windshield would have been written on with lipstick “you suck”, or “fuck you” signed “Courtney. People would come up to me and say the most rotten things to me. Not even knowing me- All Courtney fans that were brainwashed by her or something……Then, the obvious forged fax, and the shit she said about me in Rolling Stone-The one where she was on the cover! Then, every time I looked on mtv etc….there she was. With people fawning and falling all over her. “The Princess” rock star. And all the while I KNEW how horrible she was as a person. She violated my integrity, she violated my life, she even left death threats to ME as well as my elderly parents on their answering machine causing a lot of stress and weird fear within our family. It was INSANE. Like having a gangster threaten you. Whitey Bulger or something. It was partially amusing because it was so nuts, but in the back of our minds, we were questioning “is she for real”. Will someone light our home on fire? etc etc…. In any case, made it hard to sleep at night. My parents were old and lovely, and didn’t deserve that. I felt like I had brought that pox with me -again, but not having ever done a single thing to deserve that…. I lived with my parents at the time….awful for them to have had to deal with that.

If she was just some random chick that was going around on her facebook or my space or something saying shit about another chick- that is one thing. But she was one of the biggest pop stars in the world at the time, and everyone loved her-the “grieving widow”, etc etc….so, the dynamic and the impact is a lot greater regarding the emotional toll , the incredible sadness, fear, and feeling of absolute powerlessness she made me feel. Knowing millions of people were reading her interviews, etc, and all the rotten things she was saying about me. All untrue. I was just a small town nobody busker who loved songs and friends, etc….and suddenly (very publicly), I was a fictional character she made up. She made me feel like a frightened child after she emotionally abused and violated me. She threatened me, she punched me, kicked me, chased me, and nearly had me killed that night on Sunset. And then, it continued until Kathleen and others got the guts to press charges when similar assaults happened to them. I should have pressed charges long ago. But I was too scared and didn’t want to bring any attention to it. I just wanted her to leave me alone. So, I carried this around with me for a very long time. I want to let it go, and I am letting it go now. I am letting it go publicly, just like she tore me apart with her lies publicly. I don’t know what could make a person be so cruel. I don’t understand that kind of person or that kind of thinking. Anyway, thank you for listening. And again, some of you have asked me about the Cobain “case” etc, and what I think about it, etc…..I don’t really have much to say about it. It’s not my place to say anything. I have no idea what happened. All I know is that they were two very sick people at the time. Sometimes I wonder if her particular kind of sickness was just plain dark sociopaths narcissism. Or, if there is such a thing as evil. And him, just a guy that loved music and wanted a family, and loved his daughter, but maybe couldn’t take it any more.
Anyway, thank you for reading (whoever you are), and I’m sorry this is long and self indulgent or whatever. It’s weird because I’m talking about people that you guys actually are aware of. I’m not saying things like….”in the past my ex Bob was a real prick”. I am talking about two of the most known people in the world….This was also very difficult for me because it wasn’t something easily forgettable when it’s either her face or his face on mtv or a t shirt or whatever, or when your daughter is a 17 year old Nirvana fan with curious questions that any kid would have……..It takes a lot to let it go. Thank you all for giving me some place to put these feelings that have haunted me from the past. I’ve needed some kind of validation for so long. Not just a “Oh, not this fucking story again” . I know how lucky I am and how lucky I have been to have even had the chance to be friends with some of the wonderful people I’ve been friends with.

It’s also tough, and weird, and weird in that shortly after Kurt died, I met Elliott. He never judged me, and he provided a sense relief and understanding to me, and he understood. He made the loss a lot easier to take, and move on from. (Sorry, I know I am drifting here, but on top of the “Justice for K” and “Justice for E”….I get a LOT of messages from fans and people who are looking to me to provide answers, or something, and it mixes in, and is so fucking weird and sad to me)……anyway, then, he too, Elliott was gone. This was (as you can imagine), very, very hard. It was beyond comprehension. But he gave me a home for my feelings, and we shared a lot of them. He was like a little brother to me. .(you know what I mean you guys?) ugh. It’s been a lot. And hard to “just forget”, when the music is just as relevant today, and in my ears and heart as it was then. And it’s not even like I seek it out. I just hear it. Under my floor boards, my daughter’s friends . It was some of the best music ever made, and I was kind of in the middle of all of that stuff. More so of course with Elliott, but jesus, it’s been weird and hard. ….It’s hard to move away from it. Songs are different than pictures. They are invisible like ghosts, and always there. Impossible to “move on” you just have to “move different”. ugh….

And I know I am lucky with having the beautiful friends I have and of course, my daughter. I don’t want to keep reliving this. It was an incredibly difficult time in my life. When he died, we were all shattered. It was a hard time for us all.
Anyway, to finally wrap this up, I just want Frances to know that her father was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met.

I hope we all find peace (anyone who cares about this case, or Kurt, or even Courtney), and retain a certain amount of empathy , respect, and understanding towards one another. I would say forgiveness, but that one is too hard when it comes to her….

It’s also important that no matter what our differences are on any of the matters that relate to this, that we all can try our best to be real, to be tolerant, and kind. No one should ever live in the shadow of fear or have their voice or their story squelched or be made to feel outcast, or worse, like a liar. (Whatever situation it might be)…. It’s taken 22 years for me to get up the guts to just tell it all like this. I’m not trying to draw attention to myself (I don’t care about that….I love songs, you know that)…..I am simply bringing this massive chapter to a final close and letting this ghost free-for me, and for the others who were victimized and traumatized by this person who never deserved, nor should have had that kind of power. She did not deserve a person as kind and sensitive as he was, or the love that he most likely desperately tried to give her, in the hopes of getting love back. …All he wanted was a family, and a place to belong. ..Isn’t that what we all want? ..Thank you, and again, sorry this is so long. Ugh. I know, I know. xo

Billy Corgan Says Guns N’ Roses Should Have Reunited Sooner

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan commented on Guns N’ Roses reunion on the Mancow show earlier this week. Corgan said he was excited, “Yeah, I wish it had come sooner. Great band.” Corgan also has announced a Siamese Dream medley will be played on the new Smashing Pumpkins, and that he is making a documentary about America where he will go to fans houses:

As if this epoch alone is wholly made anew, and our ancestors were infinitely more stupid than we. Yet we in the West endeavor by a standard of living they could only dream of, and would laugh (I presume) at our wastefulness and common cruelty; for what we tear down we rip with distant hands, and behind the mask of a helix ID.

Mark of the Beast, indeed.

So feel free to align where I place myself in that story; that is, if you can accept that I was once innocent. But innocence in these sinews reigns no more, and with it’s abandonment went those star-zapping powers that sang so readily about my descents into the glass darkly. And the trinkets traded freely for faith.

Indeed, words are usually powerless without heart. And by that standard I stand accused. For often I’ve said far too much, and too often, without some clear intent by which to measure myself other than a wish to be proven right by time. So if there is a judge listening, it is here I wish to resign my long-beleaguered suit against so many. The grounds upon which it labored, meritless.

So what does that leave untouched? A simple impression found, and the music comes of it.

For newer sights I look towards ruinous America, and her open road. Or something approximating the mightiest byway of the 1800’s, the grand Mississippi, and that closest urbane chimera, Route 66. Add one ruddy military vet and a stack of maps, and we’ll hit out on those same veins and tributaries, heading from Chicago first towards more temperate climes. Hopeful that I might write a new album by using the milk of Delta mud, amongst other things.

Too obscure thus far? How’s this to be straight…?

My mate Justin and I are set to head out and chart the beginnings of a new documentary I’m aching to make about America. And as we meet strangers and friends in living rooms and backyards and porches, and near campfires and rusting trolleys, we’ll need your help of where to go and what we must see. If that intrigues you, and you or yours have family along our route, we’d like you to contact us with good heart. For we’ll need help and support to make this work as I imagine it in my mind. To sketch at least the beginnings of a project that may be so vast it’ll take much more than a 3 week roustabout to understand.

For example, my grandfather was at one juncture of his life a coal miner. So though it may seem I’d be more interested in where the cool kids hang about, we’ll be much more taken with documenting the stories of an elderly class that can share impressions of the country as it once was; good, bad, or indifferent. And in order to do so with integrity, I’ll need to be invited into old-fashioned parlors and the like to retain some sense memory of what’s come and gone. In exchange, I’ll bring along a guitar to play, in what we’ll call an unofficial tour before the IN PLAINSONG shows; all of which go on sale this Friday, February 5th.

As of now, our start date is immediate, where we’ll head southward along the river Illinois to the Mississippi, and then west, posting an intended route each morning; but flexible to where the wind take us. To make what I’ll deign as a living postcard before all is so faded from view that it is all but unrecognizable through pictures. For what stands left of the temples of Rome but what the Caesars forgot to destroy?

Speaking of the IN PLAINSONG tour, work has begun on constructing a long and varied set, which this round will feature in its midst a suite of Siamese Dream songs; much like the eight-or-so from Adore we did last year. The neat thing about the constructed suites being you can hear all the pieces together, strung out and fairly close to the form in which they were written. And judging by the most recent interest in this album, I’ll presume this will be a highlight each night.

If not, we look to touch on every other period of my songwriting for you (if possible with only so much time), including tunes from Zwan and The Future Embrace, and maybe even or two I’ve helped others write. And certainly with Jimmy Chamberlin there, plus Jeff Schroeder, Sierra Swan, and Katie Cole (multi-instrumentalists all), our choices for presentation and dynamics are wide open.

While Tool had a triumphant tour finale at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on Sunday, one fan did not have a great night. Near the end of the band’s set, a fan fell from the balcony. It wasn’t clear where he fell from, or if he jumped, but it’s been speculated that it was the suite level. He was moving though when he landed, but it startled other Tool fans. Freelance journalist Wesley Hodges told The Advocate, “It was scary,” Hodges said. “I caught it out of the corner of my eye. I saw a body coming down and heard a really loud crash. I saw him lying on the ground. There was chaos after that. People were screaming.”

“We can confirm that a patron fell,” said Sabrina Trahan, the arena’s event marketing and media coordinator, in an emailed statement. “An investigation is ongoing.”

Police and security personnel arrived quickly to help the fan who fell, but there has been no update on his health.

Tool wrapped up their tour at Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, LA this past weekend, and frontman Maynard James Keenan did it in style, wearing a tutu. Watch video, and see photos, below!

UPDATE: Mary Lou Lord has now said, “I NEVER said I thought she was responsible for his death.”

Kurt Cobain’s ex-girlfriend Mary Lou Lord wrote an open letter to Courtney Love on Facebook a few days ago, where she ripped Love and revealed that she backs Tom Grant, a Kurt Cobain murder conspiracy theorist and Courtney Love’s former private investigator.

“To Courtney and her sycophants and lemmings….

There is a very BIG difference between “Name Drop” and “clearing your name/history”….especially if this person/band/connection might be one of the things that will always haunt you by the fact this it is now still “a living, breathing, thing”…..and I will not go down without a fucking fight to set the record straight with that cunt. I honestly mean that. I HATE her, and why didn’t I say anything back then? I was too scared. And also, out of respect for Kurt’s daughter who was a child. I also had my own child, and it’s not cool to be putting anyone’s parents down in a place where a child might see it. I kept my mouth shut for Frances. I didn’t want to add more hate on top of what that poor kid must have already had to go through concerning the parent she had left. But now Frances is older, and married, and seems happy and grounded. That’s all that would have been important to him. And I respected him. No matter how much I did want to say what I wanted to say back then. It was the case for Many of us. We were scared shit of Courtney, her sycophants, and had to keep our mouths shut or start some kind of a flame war. None of that would have been good, or smart. Especially if there were any children involved.

But now, it appears that time did what it was meant to do, and Courtney love does not have the respect, trust, or power she once had ANd therefore, I am no longer fearful. But at one time, during the time I never said a word out of fear of a flame war with all her Courtney-tard followers. I just sat, silentely, and watched her lie about me (and everything and everyone else. She built her world, and manipulated other people’s lives by being the best LIAR and best actress in the world. Something that twisted and fucked with a lot of good people. …I know at this point, I really am far too old for this shit, but I know also, that even in my own small (and not famous or plastic life), I have just as much right to say NOW what I wanted to say then, but was too afraid of her, and her insanity, and in protecting my parents and loved ones. (she WAS that BAT SHIT)…..but now, I am fearless of that cunt, and I will say exactly what I thought of her back then. And, that Nirvana band, is still just as evident now as it was then. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea Rips Donald Trump: ‘His Main Concern In Life Is Getting A Blowjob’

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea ripped Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump in a new Rolling Stone interview. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are performing for Democrat socialist Bernie Sanders tomorrow night in Los Angeles.

“I can’t take Donald Trump or anything he says seriously,” he says. “I just think that he’s a silly reality-show bozo and blustering guy who likes getting attention. I don’t think he wants to be president, and I don’t think he has a chance to be the president. He’s just some egotistical, silly person whose main concern in life is getting a blowjob. He wants to be on TV and he wants everyone to thinks he’s important.”

For Flea, Trump’s controversial statements on immigration and terrorism are more “silly theatre” than bold provocations. “I don’t think he even believes what he says,” Flea says. “He’s just a product of, if you yell loud enough and bluster around enough, people are going to pay attention to you. He works the media and they love it. I’m hesitant to even discuss it because I just find it all to be really trivial.

He later added, “He’s a real-estate bozo who was born rich and has parlayed it from being a money-scammer guy.”

Super Bowl Halftime Shows’ Top Rock Moments

By now, everyone knows the deal with the Super Bowl halftime show and what to expect. There hasn’t been a ton of Rock performances showcased over the years and those that were obviously have to comprise their routine to fit the format. As the golden anniversary of the big game approaches, with Coldplay getting the gig this year, Alternative Nation takes a crack at highlighting some of the top ‘Rock Moments’ of Super Bowl halftime performances:

U2 (XXXVI, New Orleans, 2002) – perhaps the most meaningful and moving performance of them all due to the “Where the Streets Have No Name” finale. During a fragile time in U.S. history, U2 beautifully captures the healing power of music as they run a backdrop highlighting the names of all the 9/11 victims.

Prince (XLI, Miami, 2007) – before closing his set with a riveting version of “Purple Rain,” Prince unexpectedly blasts into the Foo Fighters “Best of You.” Grohl, who was on vacation with his family at the time, had no idea Price would be playing his song. “Having been a massive Prince fan my whole life, I was flattered beyond words. What an honor to be covered by one of your heroes,” Grohl said afterwards via Songfacts.

Bruce Springsteen (XLIII, Tampa, 2009)Working on Dream was released earlier in the week. A fitting “Glory Days” preps us for a thrilling second half with a last minute finish. The Boss’ slide across stage(3.52) at 59 years old is the highlight of this performance. The guitar flips at the end are pretty cool too.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (XLII, Glendale, 2008) – Sounding right off the record as usual. Some simple and great visual effects/crowd participation holding up the hearts. “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” is a very appropriate Super Bowl song – and that’s exactly what the Giants did.

Bruno Mars/featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers (XLVIII, East Rutherford, 2014) – bear with me here. The Peppers had nothing to really promote here, but jumped on stage for a unique rendition of “Give it Away” (7.21). The highlight of this performance however is Mars’ drum solo (0.51) to kick it off. Say what you will, the guy is a talented musician (good taste in music/Super Bowl collaborators too.

Paul McCartney (XXXIX, Jacksonville, 2005) – Classic McCartney. Some flash but mostly instruments. The epic “Hey Jude” outro was made for that Super Bowl moment. Worth noting – Fox/Ameriquest delivered a perfect McCartney intro “…building bridges across time and around the world.”

Top 10 Thrash Metal Albums Of 1986

In 1986, the metal sub-genre known as thrash metal exploded. Mostly a reaction against hair metal, thrash took the traditional metal sound and mixed it with the intensity of hardcore punk. So many thrash metal albums were released in 1986, many of which are by major players and legends in the genre. Here we will take a look at the best thrash albums from that year.

Vulcano – Bloody Vengeance

We start the list off with a nice underground gem from Brazil. This album contains elements that would influence death metal and the second wave of black metal.

Destruction – Eternal Devastation

One of the scenes that really exploded was Germany’s thrash scene and one of the most iconic bands from that scene was Destruction. On this sophomore effort, the band strips away its early black metal elements for a more traditional thrash sound. This album is really fast and intense and feels like you are listening to a tornado of riffs.

Cryptic Slaughter – Convicted

The punk crossover style of thrash also had some greats in ’86, including Cryptic Slaughter’s Convicted. Playing a fast, in your face style of crossover, this album helped influence the powerviolence genre. Highly recommended for those looking to get into this style.

Metallica – Master Of Puppets

For those who live under a rock, Master of Puppets is one of metal’s most well known albums. This record was the first thrash release to ever go platinum. The politically charged lyrics and complex songwriting helped the album please critics outside of the metal scene.

Dark Angel – Darkness Descends

For the most part, the heaviest and most extreme thrash bands tend to come from Europe and South America. A big exception to this is L.A.’s Dark Angel. Their sophomore record displays the band’s ultra fast style they call “caffeine metal” at its finest. This is also the first studio album to feature drumming icon Gene Holgan.

Voivod – Rrroooaaarrr

Hailing from Canada comes one of Dave Grohl’s all time favorite bands. On this album, the band would add experimental elements to their thrash sound, something they would continue to expand upon on later releases. This release still remains one of Voivod’s finest hours.

Nuclear Assault – Game Over

Wanting to play a more aggressive style, Nuclear Assault was formed by ex-Anthrax members John Connolly and Danny Lilker. Here on their debut, the band blends old school speed metal with crossover. The distinct vocals and political lyrics make this release a favorite among thrashers everywhere.

Slayer – Reign in Blood

Reign in Blood is the third album by Slayer and the band’s most popular release. The album is also their fastest release to date and the first one to be produced by Rick Rubin, who would produce most of the band’s albums. The album spawned Slayer’s two most popular songs “Raining Blood” and “Angel of Death“.

Kreator – Pleasure To Kill

Kreator’s best album is also the greatest and most well known release from the German thrash scene. The record’s cover is very accurate, as you will be crushed by it’s riffs and intensity. This album is now seen as a huge influence on death metal.

Megadeth – Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying

Containing the same exact line up as Killing is Business, Peace Sells is  Megadeth’s breakthrough album. The band got signed to Capitol Records and the production values went up. This is also the first Megadeth album to have politically charged lyrics, something that would become a staple of the band, though also had songs with satanic lyrics such as “The Conjuring“.

In the late 1990’s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were on their last leg with Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. After touring the world for One Hot Minute, the band tried writing and recording new material with Navarro. Until now, nothing from those sessions have ever been leaked. In rare interviews and fan communities, a title, “Circle of the Noose” would surface up. Today, it was leaked to the world by rhcptv5 on Twitter, and posted on YouTube. Commenting on the song’s character, a tribute to qawwali devotional singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Navarro recalled in an AllStar 1997 interview that:

“One of the songs we’ve done is the greatest pop song I’ve ever been a part of…It’s pop in the sense of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, hook. I really love it and we use a loop of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It’s really nice. The best way I can describe it is it’s like pepped- up ’60s folk with ’90s ideals, but I would hate to label it as folk because it’s not, it moves.”

This news of course, occurs right as the Chili Peppers are at “home stretch” with finishing their new album:

Anthony Kiedis discussed Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new album last week on Jonesy’s Jukebox.

“We’re in the home stretch. I sang yesterday, I get a week off, I go back to finish.”

He added, “We’re going to back and listen to the songs, and see if we can beat them.”

“We had written two dozen songs before we got with him. [Producer Danger Mouse] is like, ‘Let’s keep a few of those, but let’s go write all new songs in the studio. We’re looking at each other like, ‘Dude, we kind of already wrote the songs, bro.’ He’s like, ‘No, I like to write new ones in the studio.’ So, in honor of accommodating this new process, we wrote all new songs, and it’s a good thing we did.

Scott Stapp Calls Billy Corgan On Radio, Would He Fight Him?

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan appeared on the Mancow show, and former Creed frontman Scott Stapp awkwardly called into the show during Corgan’s appearance for just a minute. Alternative Nation transcribed the call.

Mancow: Creed and The Smashing Pumpkins battled each other on the charts. If you were in our studio right now, would you and Billy fight?

Scott Stapp: Absolutely not. I’m a huge fan.

Billy Corgan: Hey Scott. I met Scott when the band was first coming up, great guy. I haven’t seen him for years, but a great guy.

Mancow: We’ve had some memories, oh dear god, this guy.

Scott: We’ve had some fun.

Mancow: Okay Scott, I’m going to say goodbye to you. Farley and Scott, two piles of cocaine I will never forget. Not my thing.

Billy: One for Scott, and one for Chris, and you just watched.

Mancow then added that he himself has never done cocaine.

The Pumpkins, always the rock and roll iconoclasts, will invert the traditional formula again by touring first before heading straight to the studio after the dates to record a brand new album inspired by the sounds explored in the new acoustic setting.

Singer-songwriter Liz Phair is set to open the show for the Smashing Pumpkins on her first full tour of the U.S. in 6 years. Her debut studio album Exile in Guyville was released to critical acclaim and has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” More than two decades after the release of her debut, Phair’s influence over female voices in alternative music can still be felt today.

2015 proved to be great for the Pumpkins, who saw their End Times summer tour in support of last year’s Monuments to an Elegy album produce their best ticket sales in over 12 years. Tattooed Everything: A Homage To Pearl Jam’s “Black”

Some songs are just larger than life. More than just your typical verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, outro etc. There are a select few that are an out-of-body, emotional movement. It’s hard to even classify or describe them. One of the beautiful things about music is that fans have the ability to identify their own personal soul-touching gems. Then there are others that are just universal. Credit Pearl Jam for having at least two – “Release,” and the one and only … “Black.”

Recently, I’ve been spinning various versions of “Black” – thinking deeply about the song, what it means to me and all the different ways it could mean something so heavy to anyone that hears it. There’s one that I find to be the superhuman of the superhuman.

April of 1994. I was on vacation visiting my grandparents with my cousins in Naples, Florida. Pearl Jam had announced they will broadcast their Atlanta concert live on numerous radio stations. My cousins and I were completely submersed in the Pearl Jam world (and still are). My older cousin doctored up the fossil of a radio deck in the living room / Grandfather’s office where the three of us were staying. He found it. There was a station in Naples that would be getting the live stream. There was one problem; we had to go out for a wild night on the town with the family. Most likely a four hour dinner where us kids would blend sugar rush, sun-burnt antics with completely falling asleep, face-planting at the table. Don’t get me wrong, we loved every second of it. But this night was a Pearl Jam special. In 1994! If we didn’t catch it, the world may end.

My cousin happened to have an old cassette tape. He didn’t care what was on it. It was getting rewound and we would attempt to record the show in the “A” slot of the old radio. A four hour dinner felt like four days. As we got home we sprinted to the radio. Did it work? A couple of cranks and prayers and … Yes!

The three of us stayed up all night, listening to this epic show at a ridiculously low volume, not wanting to wake anyone up or let them hear what we were doing. How they must have wondered why we were so eager to go to “sleep” on vacation.

Three things stuck out to me after listening to that show: 1. Another reminder – this band is unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. 2. “Better Man” was debuted. “it’s dedicated to the bastard that married my mama.” 3. “Black.” The most amazing version of the song (or any other song) I had ever heard.

The intensity, raw emotion, delivery and sentiment had me half frozen, half tear-filled. I have never seen a video of this performance. I’m not sure if there even is one. A quick Google and Youtube search produced zero results. But that’s ok. I don’t think I want one. The audio is moving enough and gives me a canvas to paint my own picture.

It’s so easy to get caught up in how moving “Black” is overall and how great the melodies are that the lyrics sometimes take a back seat. Take for example the word “tattooed,” used several times. “Tattooed everything,” “tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I’ll be.” There are so many other word choices that can have been used there instead. Easier, more common words and phrases. Tattooed? It changes everything. A tattoo is meant to be permanent. It’s usually meaningful (you either never forget what your tattoo symbolizes or don’t even remember getting it). Then there’s “all been washed in Black,” “turned my world to Black.” An incredible lightning bolt of impact, in just five words. And don’t even get me started on the “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life” outro. Can’t. There are no words.

What was also different about ’94 Atlanta – Fox Theater “Black” is that it included a vigorous “we belong together” tag at the end. It was the first time I had heard it like that. Not on the album version, it’s become somewhat of a common end rap over the years. Find yourself in the right live setting, among a crowd that gets it, and you may experience the loudest silence, or perhaps you’ll be part of a unified wave – arms wrapped around each other, heads held high or low, swaying back and forth, just getting lost in it all.

There’s a small part in Cameron Crowe’s PJ20 film where Eddie Vedder discusses “Black” and what it means to him:
“It’s a true story, something that I really felt – and I still feel every time I sing it.”

There are few things more fragile or emotionally ripping than the feeling of missing. Especially if you know they (or you) are not coming back. Everyone has someone or some experience this song can relate to – whether it’s old or lost love, a friend, family member, an experience, a place or a thing. “Black” makes that tattoo itch. “Black” is a tattoo unto itself. Ironically, it can be comforting.

“…And all I taught her was .. everything. That’s All.”

2016 is big year for Pearl Jam. A tour was just announced, it marks 25 years since their debut record – Ten was released, there’s an anniversary special on all five horizons and I’m sure much more we don’t even know about.

I offer this as a thank you. As a letter of appreciation. I would rarely include “Black” on a top song list because I don’t want to do it a disservice – including it with others that have catchy hooks and big choruses. It’s more of a piece of art blanketing the sky, surfing the seas, tattooed in the emotional lock-box. There for multiple purposes, always at the right time. Somehow we survive.

Def Leppard Guitarist Says Guns N’ Roses Reunion Is ‘F**king Lame’

The new Guns N’ Roses reunion is far from “Paradise City” for Def Leppard. The titans of 80’s hair metal as The Telegraph reports that the group, at least guitarist Phil Collen is far from impressed over the news that Guns N’ Roses will be touring with their classic lineup for the first time in just under 25 years.

“We obviously think it’s really f****** lame. I love Guns N’ Roses, I think they’re really cool, I’d love to see Slash and Axl and Duff play together, that’s great. But I think it’s f****** lame considering we’ve been hardcore,” he snarls. “Our integrity’s still intact, we’ve never split up. We’ve gone through if someone had a little sniffle or something, we soldier on.”

Collen continued:

“Someone dies, someone loses an arm, someone gets cancer, we soldier on. [With Guns N’ Roses] if someone has a little barney backstage, they can’t deal with each other. I know it’s difficult, but I do think it’s pretty lame when you compare anyone else to us.”

Former Winemaking Partner ‘Doesn’t Need’ Maynard James Keenan

Eric Glomski, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan’s former winemaking partner, told the AZCentral that he didn’t need the iconic singer’s opinion when it came to wine.

“I don’t need Maynard Keenan or Kent Callaghan to tell me whether my wine is quality or not,” he said. “The person buying and drinking that bottle is the one who needs to decide.”

The article also states, “A newly formed Arizona wine group that aims to help consumers by touting quality wines will also have to sell itself to Arizona’s winemakers, as one of the leading makers on Tuesday called the Arizona Vignerons Alliance ‘divisive.’

The group, made public Monday, asks winemakers to voluntarily submit their bottles for tastings and lab analysis. If the wines meet certain standards and are proven, through an audit, to come exclusively from Arizona vineyards, the wines can display the Arizona Vignerons Alliance logo on the label.

But Eric Glomski, owner of Page Springs Cellars, one of the state’s largest and most decorated wineries, said he did not plan to submit his bottles to the group.”

“It doesn’t sound like a leadership role,” Glomski said. “It does seem like it’s divisive.”

“I ran into Axl [Rose] at a club a year or two ago and told him he’s crazy, we all miss them, and he needs to get the band back together.”

“If they didn’t get back together soon they would have missed their window and no one would have cared in 3 or 4 years.”

“People love Axl with the original band, they love him on his own but they want to see him with the original guys.”

“I said the same things to Axl that everyone said to me when me and Joe Perry were fighting.”

“Guns N Roses music was part of the fabric of all people.”

When asked about the animosity in GNR:

“I get the whole thing, I can’t talk about it. But they’re talking and they got an offer. I hope Axl can see the greater picture and not be mad at Duff and Slash.”

Howard asked if the beef was similar to the riff that tore apart Aerosmith, asked jokingly if one of the band members slept with another ones wife or something?

Steven said it was deeper then that. But the world needs to hear their music and they’re talking to each other again.

Studio Manager Denies Refusing To Give Scott Weiland’s Son His Guitar

TMZ, along with SPIN and Blabbermouth, reported yesterday that Scott Weiland’s ex-wife Mary and 15-year old son Noah went to his studio, Lavish Studios, last week to get one of Scott’s guitars that Noah wanted. Their report stated that an argument between Mary and someone at the studio ensued, and police were called. The report did not state who was working at Lavish at the time, but studio manager Rocco Guarino told Alternative Nation on Facebook that the story didn’t get the facts straight. He told us, “This was not about a guitar, and the TMZ story is almost entirely false.” He also sent us the following:

“I was the studio manager at Scott Weiland’s Lavish Studios in Burbank. Mary and I were scheduled to meet on Thursday at Lavish, but she arrived two days early with her son and the Burbank police due to false information that gear was being taken from the studio prematurely.

When I opened the door, two Burbank cops forced themselves inside uninvited and without a warrant. They tried, along with another pair of cops, then a third pair of cops, to convince me to let her in. I refused, locked up the studio and left.

There’s a hearing scheduled for Feb 5 and until then I wasn’t comfortable letting anyone into the studio without written consent from all parties.

On Thursday, as scheduled, Mary and I met amicably at Lavish, and she took possession of the studio.

At no point was a guitar in question.

I planned on writing a proper eulogy for Lavish and I regret (and resent) having to write this first. Lavish was my creative home for many years. And Scott was my friend for many years. While others had the benefit of eulogizing him in the press, my name is now associated with a lie regarding his son.”

Scott Weiland’s Lavish Studios closed last week, and is now for lease. Weiland opened the studio in 1997 in Burbank, CA, recording his solo albums 12 Bar Blues (1998), Happy in Galoshes (2008), The Most Wonderful Time of Year (2011), and Blaster (2015) at the studio. Weiland also worked on his vocals for Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, and Art of Anarchy at Lavish. Lavish was a private studio until 2014, when it was opened to the public to record with Rocco Guarino heading up the endeavor for Weiland. Guarino continued to run the studio in the two months following Weiland’s death on December 3, 2015.

The 2,400 square foot studio is up for lease for $4,200 per month.

Pearl Jam & Dave Matthews Band Supergroup Performs At Sundance

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready performed with his all-star cover band – 1,2,3, GO! this past Saturday night in Park City, Utah as the Sundance festivities started to wind down. The group, which has performed for the past few years, includes Fuel frontman – Brett Scallions on vocals, Ken Schalk (Candiria, Fuel) on drums and Stefan Lessard from Dave Matthews Band on bass.

New Art Show Will Showcase Kurt Cobain’s Shoes

Beginning February 11, KM Fine Arts Los Angeles will display photographer Geoff Moore’s photos of items from Kurt Cobain’s vault that he shot for the book Cobain Unseen. The items include Cobain’s sneakers, a guitar with a Richard Nixon sticker on it, and a broken guitar.

The photographs also feature subtle references to Nirvana’s oeuvre, such as a heart-shaped box filled with broken rosaries. There are also several images of Cobain’s mangled guitars, scuffed by pick marks and marked by stickers.

Moore, a self-taught artist and film director working in Los Angeles, was recently featured in a benefit exhibition for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music curated by Dana Louise Kirkpatrick, Flea, and Gagosian director Deborah McCleod. See photos below, via ArtNet.











Former Mudhoney manager Bob Whittaker shared a memory on Krist Novoselic’s Facebook page in December following Scott Weiland’s death. He shared a previously untold story about Weiland meeting Kurt Cobain backstage at Stone Temple Pilots’ show at Seattle Arena on July 8, 1993.

“I remember in Seattle – Butthole Surfers opened for them? We were back stage to say hi to the band after the show = Gibby , King Coffee ETC – I was goofing around with Kurt – he jumped on my back and I took him into the #sonetemplepilots dressingroom. Security was going to toss us out – but Scott saw Kurt and rescued us.

I set Kurt down then Scott and Kurt talked at the deli tray table – a bit awkward at first – Kurt said ‘people tell me you sound like #Nirvana . You must owe me some publishing money then.’ Scott didn’t miss a beat and pulled out a crumpled sweaty $1 bill from his pocket and gave it to Kurt. Kurt took it, We all laughed and left. Interview: Anthrax’s Charlie Benante Discusses World Tour And New Record

GMGLOGOHeader While attending the NAMM 2016 Convention in Anaheim, CA last week, I was honored in being presented with an opportunity via, to interview, one of heavy metal’s best drummer’s, the one…the only…Charlie Benante of Anthrax.

As the band is currently embarked on a massive 43 date world tour and set to release their 11th studio album, ‘For All Kings,’ on February 26th, Benante took the time out of his busy schedule to speak with me.

FAKHow do you as well as the entire band feel to be celebrating Anthrax’s 35th Anniversary in what will be your 11th studio album, ‘For All Kings,’ set for a February 26th release?

Benante: Well I know we’re all pretty stoked about the record and the way it turned out. I think we made a really good record and the feedback so far…the people who’ve heard it kind of agree, so that’s a really good thing. I love good momentum. It makes everybody happy and in this time that we’re living in, especially musically speaking, if you can make a record that has more than 4 or 5 songs deep and it has a good variety of songs. You don’t frontload it with those first couple of songs. You continue the record taking the listener on a journey, musically speaking. I think you’ve really got something there.”

From 1st conception & recording ‘Worship Music’ to its completion in 2011, did you expect to receive such high praise from various rock & heavy metal media outlets? to name a few: Guitar World, Metal Hammer, Revolver, That Metal Show. When you were on That Metal Show, Eddie Trunk certainly expressed nothing less than how impressed he was with the record.

anthrax-worship-musicWere you also surprised when Worship Music received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock/Metal Performance (or) did you have a strong feeling it was going to happen?

Benante: “We had no expectations for that whole record. It’s really hard to say what a record’s going to do or how it’s going to be received. Basically you’re doing the best you possibly could do and until it’s out there and until people are hearing good feedback, I guess that’s how you know you’ve done something good. We’re so close to it that it’s hard to look outside because we’re inside of it, so it’s really nice when you hear good feedback on the outside.”

We live in a time where everybody has an opinion and everyone’s opinion can be featured somewhere, whether it’s an online column and everybody has their form because of the internet. I just find it really shitty that someone who never really produced anything, musically speaking, can just say, “I don’t really like it.” It just sucks because you put so much work into a record and someone disapproves.”

How are you holding up with your bout of carpal tunnel post-surgery? Have you had slight symptoms of it in the past or more recently, say around 2011?

Benante: “I struggled with carpal tunnel for about 15 years to the point where I was going anywhere from acupuncture to chiropractor to actually getting a shot or two of cortisone to dipping my hand in a bucket of ice water during a show to buying a can of air. You turn it upside down and spray it on your wrist to get the frozen aspect of it and hopefully it wakes your hand up so I could get the feeling back in my hand. I couldn’t deal with anything. I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing because of the situation. My Paiste rep, a symbol company, referred me to this doctor in LA. I went there and had a consultation done. So, he examined exactly what the problem was and I went for the operation and it was a success.

My problem now is I can play fine, I play great, but once I get past the three-week period on tour, it starts to get fucked up again. Not the way it was, but I need to take a little bit of a rest from it. A good friend, Jon Dette will come and fill in. I’m so happy that we have someone like Jon Dette. I jokingly would say that he’s my right-hand man, which is true because it’s my right hand.”

What date was it on the ‘Worship Music’ tour when you realized you were physically unable to play drums? Was drummer, John Dette your first choice to temporarily fill-in for the last tour & will he fill in on this tour as well?

Benante: “Yes he will. John will come out for just a few shows. You see, with the whole ‘Worship Music’ thing, you have to understand that we played over 300 shows on that tour and in the middle of all this, my mom got sick and she passed away during that whole Worship Music Tour, which took me out of the game for a bit to go be with her. Towards the end of the carpal tunnel thing, it just became too much for me and that’s when I decided to have the surgery. It was a very emotional time, but I didn’t want to hold the band back, so they went ahead with shows. During the time my mom was sick, Jason Bittner came in, did some shows and then Jon Dette came in and then basically stayed.”
Once you confirmed Dette as your replacement and took time off to heal, did you know you were eventually going to emerge with having written 20 new songs, some of which would end up on ‘For All Kings?’

Benante: “I just went into my studio and started to compile stuff. I was so happy with what was coming out that good momentum just carried over and when I would listen back to some of the riffs and some of the ideas, I was completely happy because I felt like, “wow, this was a breakthrough!” The ideas and the songs were really strong and I couldn’t wait to show everybody the stuff. I had demos that I’d send out of the songs and I’d get, “Great, can’t wait to get in a room and actually play this and work on the album.” So, it was good all-around because they knew even though I wasn’t with them for some of the shows, I was being productive, which was really important because I didn’t want to just sit on my ass. Once I was able to use my hand again, I would go right into it.”

You are highly revered as one of rock and metal’s greatest drummers. What steps have you taken in your music career that have equated to earning this spot and reputation as a drummer?

Benante: “I think you set up certain standards. I’ve always kind of believed in the Neil Pert way of making records where I’m trying to step it up every time I do something. You’re trying to better yourself. You’re also trying to make your audience or your listeners more interested. So, if you can up it, I think that’s important.”

Since the departure of lead guitarist Rob Caggiano, was Jon Donais of Shadows Fall someone you had in the back of your mind to recruit?
“Rob pretty much took care of that situation. He asked Jon before we even knew what his decision was going to be and he did it. We all knew Jon, we all like Jon. So, it was a pretty smooth transition.”

What is the overall energy like now that Jon Donais is the official 5th member and does the band feel a sense of comradery?

Benante: “I think he fit in very well with us from the start. He’s a great guy, great guitar player, easy to work with and he just loves metal!

Scott Ian recently interviewed with EMP LiVE TV about 2 months ago. In terms of what fans could expect to hear on the next record, he was quoted in stating “It’s A Fucking Metal Record.” As for yourself, you have referred to it as “Aggressive and super-thrashy.” Did Jon Donais have any influence on the band taking this creative approach?

Benante: “Nope, I think it had to do, especially with the first 3-songs that were written for the record,  “You Gotta Believe,” “Evil Twin” and a song called “Zero Tolerance” and when it came off of that whole “Worship Music” cycle, a lot of those bands that were helping us, like Exodus and Death Angel, just had an old-school thrash vibe. I think sub-consciously it just came in and I think it just stayed with me and those were the first 3-songs that kind of came out. After that, there were a few other tunes that were written and then like 6 or 7 songs that gave us a sigh of relief. Then there were other types of music, like the song “Blood Evil Wings” and all songs that are a little different than those other songs I mentioned. I’m happy because to me, a record should be a variety under that umbrella of hard rock and heavy metal, you know?”

The lyrics in the 1st track, “Evil Twin” state:

“You represent your discontentSlaughtering the innocent

The arrogance to reinvent
The holy words their meanings rent

You’re no martyrs”

Considering the song and lyrics pertain to modern day terrorism & the song calls out religious and political extremism, what initially inspired the band to write this song? Who’s idea was it initially?

Benante “Everybody is afraid to touch the topic of religion, especially with the extreme muslims. It’s such a touchy subject. You can attack any other religion and nothing bad will come about, but I think those that are extremists, the way they are taught or the way, as I’d like to say, “brain-washed.” they’re not of sound mind, They’re of a different mind. I think you should enjoy this life that you are given on this earth because we really don’t know what it is in the afterlife. We can definitely prove that this life is this life here because we wake up every day and do the same thing that we do.  The afterlife I’m not so sure about. So, I don’t understand why you’d want to hurt other people in thinking that you’ll go on in the afterlife to have bliss. I just don’t understand it.”

From the tragic loss of Pantera’s late, great Dimebag Darrell in 2004 to the more recent attacks at both The Charlie Hebdo building & The Eagles of Death Metal concertWhat are your thoughts on live event safety as a concert-goer and in terms of a band’s on-stage safety?

Benante: “It’s something that I am very aware of. I will always look to my left and right most of the time (laughs). I am very concerned about the audience, for their safety and ours. I think especially coming this Summer with festivals, somewhere like France, it’s pretty scary. I don’t understand why someone would want to fuck up such a fun time. We are concerned about safety.”

You seem to be the American Bruce Dickinson or renaissance man (if you will), drummer, guitarist, lyricist, songwriter, band leader, overseeing Anthrax’s marketing, merchandising, artwork & now with recently announcing ‘Benante’s Blend’ in early-mid 2015.” The coffee comes in two different varieties: ‘Be All End All’ blend which is a dark roast with a real kick, and the ‘Forever Metal’ blend, a milder coffee. ‘Benante’s Blend’ is currently available via your website,

images(12)Tell us a bit about your appreciation as the coffee connoisseur you are and the decision to begin selling your own coffee line?

Benante: “Back many years ago, Dave Mustaine & myself released two coffees. I was 100% into it. It was a great moment and then something happened somewhere and it just stopped happening. I always said, “I’m going to continue this!” It took me a couple of years to find the right people to help me do it, but I did and I met with roasters and told them what I was looking for. We got together and tried each bean and kind of came up with a few together and we put it all in a pot and made it work. It just tasted great and I said, “This is it! This is the coffee I want.” And I just sell it online. Of course I’d like to branch out and get it into places, but I’m doing it very organically.”

How do you and the band feel to currently be on a 4-week/43-date tour with Lamb of God in celebration of Anthrax’s 35th anniversary. You also have opening support acts, DeafHeaven & Power Trip. Tell us a bit about how this Anthrax and Lamb of God tour came to fruition?

“We’ve known each other for quite a long time and were contacted about doing it. We agreed it would make a great package and a good tour for fans to see. As far as the other bands go, I’ve been a Deafheaven fan for a bit now and the band Power Trip, I love them too! I think they’re great! Overall, I think it’s a great package!”

As of March 1st, you’re set to tour with Iron Maiden in Monterrey, Mexico & on April 28th with Megadeth in San Juan, Puerto Rico? What are your thoughts on touring with both bands in 2016, especially with Megadeth given that both bands are 2 of THE BIG 4?

Benante: “The Maiden thing is going to be pretty cool. You know, it’s South American shows, they’re going to be huge shows, so I’m very happy about that.”

Worship Music certainly had interesting artwork displaying zombified, deformed creatures gravitating towards the Anthrax symbol. With a similar theme on the “For All Kings” cover, who was the artist who created the art for both records?

Benante: “The cover concept I worked with Alex Ross on. Basically, it was just my vision of how I wanted the covers to be and how I wanted them to look. I collaborated with Alex on them. For instance, this new one, I’m trying to tie-in the last three covers: “We’ve Come For You All,” “Worship Music” and now this one, they’re all in the same world. So, when I met with Alex, he started discussing it. My first idea, he didn’t really like that much, so I scrapped that and then I talked to him about this other concept that I had and that’s when he said, “Well now I think you’ve got something.” We bounced back and forth; he made the composition and felt it was better to have the kings positioned in a way where it shows the depth of the hall, the stained glass window with the beam shining through. So, he went with that and it just turned out amazing. I love it and can’t stop looking at it.”

What is your opinion on physical media versus digital downloads & streaming services?

Benante: “I don’t like streaming. I hate all that crap. I’d rather be a fan and have the piece in front of you where you could read the liner notes and everything about it instead of just consume. Enjoy it that way. It’s just a digital file. I know that’s how things have gotten, but I appreciate to listen to it the way it was intended to be listened to. The way the intro to the record starts. I just want you to stare at the cover, get absorbed in the whole vibe and let it take you on that journey.”

In your opinion, what is the current state of heavy metal music? What newer bands do you believe are currently making an impact?

Benante: “Some bands that are doing something new and something different. I’ve always been a Ghost supporter. I love the band Deafheaven, who’s out with us. I love the band Rival Sons. So, there are some really good bands. You just have to search a little bit.”

What are your thoughts on the recent passing of Motorhead’s, Lemmy Kilmister and the webcast memorial that was recently posted via YouTube?

Benante: “I played at his 70th birthday two weeks prior to his death. It was pretty shocking when I saw him. He didn’t really look that well and I thought to myself, “Lemmy doesn’t look so good.” Then I got the word and thought it was pretty shitty. We lost someone that was very important to this whole thing that we call metal and hard rock.”

How do you feel about the cancelation of Eddie Trunk’s, That Metal Show?

Benante: “It was pretty sad. I had a feeling it was coming and I think they did too. Maybe it gets picked up by some other outlet and maybe it can be better than it was. I just think it was a good show. It was kind of fun and I always equated it to a sports show for music. So, maybe it will get picked up.”
