Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan was on 93.3 this morning and talked about his feud with Soundgarden and Chris Cornell:

“Well there’s a little bit of a backstory there. Chris Cornell was somebody I considered a friend, and would never have said a harsh word about. When the band came back in 2007, he was quoted in an interview saying basically he didn’t consider our reunion to be, in quotations, to be ‘legitimate.’ I kind of have an elephant’s memory when it comes to somebody punching me in the face. Cornell’s one of those people who is extremely talented, I was a fan from literally their 2nd EP, met him in 1991 and still believe in what was great about the band. But when we’re sitting there having conversations about who is doing what, I am no longer going to shield somebody, if they want to punch me in the face I’m happy to punch them back in the face. Respect the man’s talent, People gloss over the Timbaland album, haha, you know what I mean? My point is look, I don’t have any specific bone to pick, even though I just made a specific case for one. My point is don’t lump us in with people who are sort of just doing the reunion lap. Now, of course fans are lighting up my Twitter saying do you realize Soundgarden is doing a new album, well if they are great, that’s what they should be doing. Great musicians they should make new music and hopefully they’ll make great albums because we need artists to make great albums and great music in this day and age of the robots and the posers and the faux hawks bands. Does it make sense; do I sound like a fan? Because I am a fan. I want all of my generation to raise the bar, and I don’t appreciate when somebody from my generation, who I once considered a friend, decides to piss on my little spot in the corner for whatever reason at the same time he’s making the Timbaland album, you know what I mean? That’s where it gets kind of dicey for me, so that’s sort of the real back story of where that came from.”

Near the end of the interview Billy joked, “Chris Cornell will personally greet you” at Smashing Pumpkins’ show on Halloween in New York.  The DJ suggested that Billy should dress up as Chris Cornell for Halloween, “That’s actually really funny, I’ll be Chris Cornell ’91.”

4:40 in Billy talks Soundgarden.

  • is he one?

    I think It’s fine then…

  • Dave

Would he call the Pumpkin reunion not “legitimite” because it was just Billy, the drummer, and some hired guns?

  • cosmicatomic

A lot of times I think BillCo flies off the handle for no reason, but this is pretty rational. And Cornell is my favorite.

  • Patrick

billy is just jealous of chris’s hair…

    …but aren’t we all.

  • Fred Bacon

Billy has some rather severe self esteem issues. Let’s all wish him well.

  • Jim

This is actually the most reasonable thing I’ve seen from Billy in a while

  • Dennis

I can’t stand Billy, but I also can’t pretend what Chris said wouldn’t bother me if I was Billy.

That said, this man talks more sh*t than Jeff Ross. He’s a bully and deserves some of his own medicine. It’s not like Chris didn’t have a point based on what @Dave brought up.

  • Johnny

He has the right idea, but is, as usual, off base.

He says he is speaking as a “fan.” Can’t Chris Cornell speak as a fan? He see’s half of one of his favorite bands missing and it’s not legitimate to him. Now, it’s 1/4 of the band. (Yes, we all know Billy did more than 1/4 the creative work, but to Chris, it was a less legitimate version of the band, as it was to many fans)

And it’s not like Future Embrace was any good at all. That album is brutal.

  • Julz

So where’s the feud again Billy? You come off as a jealous douche. Is it because they were asked to headline major festivals in the last 2 years and your band wasn’t even a blip on the radar? Is it because Soundgarden have remained friends and have the same line-up they had since ’91? Or is your wrath against CC simply jealousy for his amazing talent who has remained relevant in rock music. STFU Billy, you’re an untalented idiot who needs to hang it up already.

  • Mark

Did Corgan just make sense and speak rationally??? I think he DID!

  • Magic Mike Mazzarone

How dare you insult the great William Patrick. This man is an inspiration to us all! He entertains millions and continues to put out some of the greatest music to date. Chris Cornell on the other hand? Well one word – Timbaland.

  • King Cornell

I don’t know who is right here, and honestly, I really don’t care. Cornell said a lot of stuff back in the day to fend off ppl who said he had to bring SG back together to legitimize himself. He probably regrets saying what he said about Billy, but then again, who knows, maybe it was misconstrued by the media. On the other hand, Billy has a right to be upset but shouldn’t feel the need to attack SG just because they attacked him first. I mean, what is this, the sixth grade? SG won’t give a response, Billy won’t talk about this again, and this will blow over. Chris isn’t listening to Oceania, and we all know Billy: he will hold a grudge till he dies and won’t listen to King Animal. Lucky for us, we have both and can respect both. Billy needs to remember he doesn’t have to legitimize himself to anyone and he is the one with the great album out in 2012 and SG still has to deliver. He needs to be a bit more positive about “his generation”. He has a thing with Kurt because of Courtney, he isn’t a “big fan” of Eddie, he is pissed at Chris…I just want to hear music, and that goes for everybody in the genre right now.

  • SuperSG

I’d f*ck Cornell’s butthole for six hours if I could.

  • Deviate

    Alrighty then.

  • SuperSG

I wonder if Cornell would let me eat his butthole. I bet it is yummy

  • Patrick

@Magic Mike Mazzarone – it was a joke, dude. With a screen name like that, I figured you would get it.

Billy has a reason to have a beef about the whole situation. If you know SP history, you know that the Smashing Pumpkins IS Billy Corgan. His band and his songs. I saw them in 2007 at the Asheville residency and it was an awesome show.

And I saw Soundgarden last year and it was just as awesome. I am glad both bands are back and making what we want – music.

Final note – I have no shame in admitting that I like Scream. I just wish they would release the ‘rock’ version of that album.

  • Inmytree

Billy is spot on here, for a change.

  • Eu

Billy Corgan = Diva = Attention Whore

  • SIN

Hey, I went into this expecting to be pissed, but he really wasn’t that bad.

I don’t have any anger towards his statements.

  • thefreewheelinmarkarm

Of course its not legitimate. Not in 2007 or now. Would you call Guns N Roses without Slash or Axle a reunion? No. Is it legitimately Black Sabbath without Geezer Butler? No. I need say more?

  • Brett Buchanan

markarm, totally different. Billy literally wrote all of the songs in the original Pumpkins, sang them all and played just about all of the guitar parts and even most of the bass. I think the Pumpkins reunion was totally legitimate until Billy Corgan fired Jimmy Chamberlin in 2009. I think Billy still has a right to the name, but without Jimmy it’s not the same. James and D’arcy honesty don’t make much of a difference.

  • Patrick

    Well put, Brett.

  • Brett Buchanan

If Billy had shot back at Cornell in 07-09 for his comments, it would have made sense since Cornell’s supposed comments were uncalled for and were recent at the time. But at this point, that was FIVE YEARS ago, it’s like, get over it. I haven’t seen Chris say anything negative about his contemporaries in the last few years, even in that SPIN article it was Matt and Kim who criticized Stone Temple Pilots’ reunion not Chris.

  • Brett Buchanan

Also Soundgarden have a new album coming out now, so his whoe ‘they’re not doing new material’ point isn’t valid any more. He should use that on Faith No More.

  • Shadow on the Sun

Corgan can defend himself but yeah, replacing your entire band and talking legitimacy doesn’t hold up. I even if he is he principal songwriter. Scream was a great album and there’s plenty of pumpkins songs that are terrible. So Billy has no leg to stand on there.
I doubt that Cornell will respond because he’s not a child like corgan is. Cornell had a valid point and Billy didn’t agree or care for it.

  • Woman of Golden Words

Billy Corgan says this…Billy Corgan says that. Corgan’s opinion in a nutshell: “I’m the owner of grunge and I know how it should sound, every reunion is for the money” (right, because no one else is doing it for the money… let’s be honest).

Corgan is the Dave Mustaine of grunge. Good musician who just can’t keep his mouth shut and needs to criticize others to gain some attention. And I’m not a big fan of Smashing Pumpkins, but I got to recognize they have some cool songs.

On the other hand, I think Chris is entitled to have an opinion, just like anybodoy else. Apparently many Smashing Pumpkins felt disappointed with Corgan’s choice. He might be the main composer, the great mind behind the band, but you got to understand it… it’s just like with GNR as other user pointed here. Does anybody wonder why haven’t they both gone solo? Because the name sells, that’s why.

You’re in it for the money too, Corgan. Bashing Scream is so 2009…

Tag Team Match: Billy Corgan and Trent Reznor vs. Chris Cornell and Timbaland!

  • BillyL

    Three questions:

    1. What did Cornell say about SP and when/where?

    2. What did Kim and Matt say about STP’s reunion?

    3. Why can’t these artists shut the fuck up about everyone else and just mind their own business?

  • Woman of Golden Words

Tag Team Match: Billy Corgan and Trent Reznor vs. Chris Cornell and Timbaland!

LOL 😛 I’d rather hear Part of Me (and I don’t really like that song) than Reznor’s cover of Get Down, Make Love. Way to ruin a song. So yeah, Timbo 4 lyfe! *joking, joking, it’s fine if Chris wanted to experiment but we had enough*

  • Brett Buchanan

Matt Cameron said of STP “These guys are just painful” in 2010 in Soundgarden’s SPIN magazine cover story when he saw a copy of Billboard magazine with STP on the cover. Kim Thayil told a story of an unnamed member of STP mouthing off to him in the 90’s (it may have been Robert DeLeo because he said Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell were assholes to him at Lollapalooza 1992) and Kim challenged him to a fight. The STP member bought Kim a beer instead as a peace offering. When the interviewer said STP’s reunion was full of bad vibes and obligations, Kim said their reunion was different. So I guess it was really just Matt trashing STP, which I thought was uncalled for. Especially when at the time STP had a new album out and all Soundgarden had scheduled was a Lollapalooza performance.

  • Corgan_Cornell

    clash of the egos…

  • BillyL

Ah, thanks for the information, Brett. Didn’t know about that. What a shame…two of my favorite bands, too. I guess there’s no hope for a SG/STP co-headlining tour anytime soon then.

  • johnatan

Ok.. i think billy has a good point. But isn’t that kinda kindergardish? 😀
40 year old’s throwing punches from over some stupid who’s got the most legimate “reunion” shit.

guess the egos need to clash sometimes.. eh?

  • bmeade

I don’t know about James with SP but he was pretty solid with APC last year.

  • Staley_Forever

Wow Mayan/Mr. General/Be/Be one/Be Be or whatever your real name is, you never cease to amaze us with your incredible knowledge when it comes to alternative rock music!!!

Now, please “BE” gone with you.

  • BillyL

It’s ironic, many of these bands give STP shit, but STP never talks shit about anyone. STP 1 – Everyone else 0.

On a separate note, Billy shouldn’t be too offended by anything anyone says about him. He is the master of passing judgment and offering opinions on everyone else’s business, so I think it pretty much balances itself out.

  • Max

I don’t get how this makes it better. It just makes me think his comments were the result of him being bitter from a 5 year old opinion.

  • Inmytree

I agree with Matt’s take on STP but there’s no need to bash them publically.

  • SuperSG

What exactly is in your tree, Inmytree? Is it a cat? A person? A Na’vi? (feline humanoid, see? I combined a cat and a person!) Taylor Momsen!?!?!?! MJM would love to find a taylor momsen in his tree! I feel wasted…

  • Inmytree

Its a Pearl Jam song … Original, I know … Can I say its a Na’vi from here on out though? That’s badass …

  • Pingback: Corgan gets even with Chris Cornell, calls out U.S. alternative radio « Hipsters United

I wish i was a 10 foot tall blue cat guy who was a former cripple! Think i can get a movie about me and get Taylor Momsen as my Blue piece of ass?
Yeah, Avatar was awesome. I traveled to New Zealand because that and the Lord of the Rings was filmed there…I am such a Grungey Nerd…

  • Dreux

NOW I get it. I’m cool with this.

  • SuperSG

Just make your IP “Na’vi In my tree”. It Rhymes too!

  • SuperSG

  • jjc19461

Is it me, or does Billy look like Powder?

  • Shayla

Ok, this makes a lot more sense. I understand where Billy’s coming from 100%. Given the rumors of how Audioslave ended, along with the fact that he made an album with TIMBALAND, I’m amazed so many still worship Cornell. The guy sounds like a total douche.

  • Evenflow82

I wonder which artists are on Corgan’s ipod?

    Smashing Pumpkins

  • fuzz

@Shayla: Yeah its hilarious that Cornell doesn’t take more of a beating for that Scream album. That had to be the biggest sell out move that any respected artist from the 90’s could have ever made… I mean Weezer did a song with Lil Wayne and stuff but you could tell Weezer was in on the joke… Cornell was actually trying to make a big artistic statement… So pathetic.

Can you imagine if Billy Corgan made an album with Timbaland? His career would be finished… He’d never live it down.

Good on Corgan for calling Cornell out on this.

Billy Corgan , Chris Cornell and Scott Weiland have all traveled down the same musical paths in the last 10 years. After the disbanding of the Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots, each musician went on to do less than wonderful solo projects and side bands. But at the heart of the matter is the fact that Alternative / Grunge rock music will forever sound like Billy Corgan , Chris Cornell and Scott Weilands voice. You cant have those bands be replaced by different versions ok?? Billy should quit wasting all this time and energy on making comments about other rock bands and get back together with the original Pumpkins : that means Darcy , James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain ok?? And Chris Cornell needs to stop wastin his time promoting a president that has disgraced the united states with his failed socialist agenda and Scott Weiland just needs to stop with the drugs and drinking and reconnect with STONE Temple Pilots in a real meaningful way : by putting out a new hard rocking grunge style album . IN FACT : ALL 3 BANDS : PUMPKINS, GARDEN AND PILOTS NEED TO DO EXACTLY THAT: PUT OUT NEW HARD ROCKING GRUNGE ANGST FILLED MUSIC , STOP WITH YOUR SHOWBOATING, STOP WITH YOUR ENDLESS SELF PROMOTION TOURS, STOP WITH YOUR PATHETIC POLITICAL PANDERING AND STOP DOING DRUGS AND ALCOHOL OK?? GET ON WITH THE GRUNGE ROCK REUNIONS AND THIS TIME, GET IT RIGHT!!! I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE ON THAT RIGHT?? 🙂

No Billy, because Chris Cornell ’91 was attractive and had lovely hair, so I doubt you’d be able to pull off a convincing halloween costume.

  • John

Billy Corgan had some lovely locks in 91.
