JERRY CANTRELL DISCUSSES THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN LAYNE STALEY AND WILLIAM DUVALL

Alice In Chains singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell discussed the similarities between current Alice In Chains singer William DuVall and the late great Layne Staley in a new interview with EMusician. Below are some excerpts:

“When Layne and I worked together vocally, we shared some influences but he had some that were unique to him,” Cantrell says. “As a kid I sang these brooding, Bartók pieces in school choir. It was creepy, and it stuck with me. When Layne and I got together, that kind of thing was there from him and me. That’s what was great about it.”

“I didn’t have a lot of confidence as a singer then,” Cantrell continues. “But Layne pushed me to sing my own sh*t. I was unsure, especially standing next to a guy like Layne, who had an amazing voice, was super talented and so quick. He was a natural. I’m not. But with Layne pushing me, my confidence grew. William is real challenging, too—a natural like Layne was. The way we work together is very similar. The sound and style of the band is intact because of Sean, Mike, and myself, and what William brings to the band. That’s how we are able to continue and be ourselves.”

“William is a high-speed dragster; he’s nitro,” Cantrell adds. “I’m more like a Chevy truck. I kind of just plod along. But my good old Chevy truck will last a long time. William gets up there, and gets gas behind it. I don’t have that sort of range, I am a medium to low plodder. That’s how we differ in styles. Layne and William are similar. Layne had gas and he could hit that nitro button and go to the next level with some teeth on it.”

SONIC YOUTH’S KIM GORDON DISCUSSES THURSTON MOORE CHEATING ON HER & GETTING BREAST CANCER

In a recent interview with Elle Kim Gordon discussed and getting breast cancer and her relationship with fellow Sonic Youth member Thurston Moore. Here are some excerpts:

“Some years ago, a woman Gordon declines to name became a part of the Sonic Youth world, first as the girlfriend of an erstwhile band member and later as a partner on a literary project with Moore. Eventually, Gordon discovered a text message and confronted him about having an affair. They went to counseling, but he kept seeing the other woman. “We never got to the point where we could just get rid of her so I could decide what I wanted to do,” Gordon says. “Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul.”

Then Gordon was found to have a noninvasive form of breast cancer called DCIS. “I’m fine; it’s literally the best you can have,” she says of her diagnosis, which required a lumpectomy. “I didn’t do radiation or anything, but I was like, Okay, what else is going to happen to me?”

DAVE GROHL DISCUSSES NIRVANA’S ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME CHANCES

Dave Grohl briefly discussed Nirvana’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame chances in a new interview with Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone told Grohl that Nirvana will be eligible next year for induction and Grohl responded, “We’ll be eligible?” He added, “Wow. I didn’t even know that. Interesting. Well, hopefully they make us wait as long as Rush did, because did you see all their fucking fans out there tonight?”

Nirvana (Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear) reunited last year to record and perform their new track “Cut Me Some Slack” with Paul McCartney. They performed at the 12-12-12 show at Madison Square Garden in New York and on Saturday Night Live. The surviving members of Nirvana also performed with Rick Nielsen and Corey Taylor at several Sound City Players show, and they nearly performed the In Utero track “Milk It” with PJ Harvey in London recently. Many have speculated regarding who will front the Nirvana performance when the band is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

REUNITED PORNO FOR PYROS RECORDING NEW MATERIAL

Porno for Pyros have recently been recording new music. So far they have recorded “Aqua” and “Little Me.”  Some of the tracks they are recording were originally written in the late 90’s for a planned third Porno For Pyros album. It is unknown if Porno For Pyros are recording a full new album or just select new tracks. The reunited lineup features Perry Farrell, Stephen Perkins, Peter DiStefano, and Mike Watt. Below are photos from DiStefano’s Facebook of the band recording.

DAVE GROHL DISCUSSES INDUCTING RUSH INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Dave Grohl discussed inducting Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

“It’s terrifying to play your favorite band’s song in front of your favorite band. It’s one thing to sit in the basement and woodshed 2112, and its another to stand in front of Rush in a fucking kimono and a wig and try to use a wah-wah pedal in your platform shoes. It was amazing. Tonight was one of the most special nights of my life.”

“When I got 2112 when I was eight years old; it fucking changed the direction of my life. I heard the drums. It made me want to become a drummer. At rehearsals the other day, I had never met Neil Peart before. Alex [Lifeson] and Geddy [Lee] are the nicest people in the world. I was coming to rehearsal and I was meeting Neil for the first time, and this man was as influential as any religion or any hero or any person in someone’s life. He said, “So nice to meet you. Can I make you a coffee?” And he made me a coffee, man. And later on that night, I went to dinner and had a couple glasses of wine and I started fucking crying because my hero made me a fucking coffee. It was unbelievable, man. So that’s kind of how this whole experience has been.”

MOBY SAYS MARK LANEGAN HAS ‘ONE OF THE BEST VOICES I’VE EVER HEARD’

The Quietus interviewed Mark Lanegan and Moby regarding their Record Store Day collaboration track “The Lonely Night.” Here are a couple of excerpts from the interview:

Mark Lanegan: I’ve been a fan of Moby for many years and was thrilled when he asked me to collaborate with him. I felt like the words and vocal melody really wrote itself – I just did what the music told me to.

Moby: Well, Mark has done a lot of different types of music over the years, so I didn’t think of him as an artist coming from one very specific genre or style. I’ve known of him from the SST days, and I’ve just always loved his voice. And I guess in writing the music I wanted to provide a very respectful, atmospheric and emotional background for his amazing voice.

Mark Lanegan: I would love to do something together again.

Moby: Yes, I’ve let Mark know that I’ll happily work on anything with him. He’s one of my favourite people, and he clearly has one of the best and most remarkable voices I’ve ever heard.

JOSH HOMME SAYS ELTON JOHN CALLED HIM & ASKED TO APPEAR ON NEW QOTSA ALBUM, JOHN SAID BAND NEEDED ‘AN ACTUAL QUEEN’

Josh Homme was interviewed on XFM and told the story behind Elton John appearing on the new Queens of the Stone Age album, “[Elton] was in a car listening to Them Crooked Vultures and his assistant said, ‘You need to hear Queens’. The guy driving the car was an old room-mate of mine! So all of a sudden I get a phone call at my house on a Sunday. I picked up and he said: ‘Hello Josh, this is Elton’. I thought someone was messing with me. He said, ‘The only thing missing from your band is an actual queen!’”, to which Homme replied. “I said, ‘Honey, you have no idea’.”
