KRIST NOVOSELIC & PAT SMEAR DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY OF NIRVANA RECORDING MORE NEW MATERIAL

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic was asked by SPIN in a recent interview if he would consider recording more new material with the surviving members of Nirvana beyond the 2012 collaboration with Paul McCartney ‘Cut Me Some Slack.’ Novoselic said, “I might be open. I’m always willing to play. I want to make a lot more music this year.”

A reporter also asked Nirvana/Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear if he objected to the reunion of the surviving members of Nirvana being labeled a Nirvana reunion. Smear said, “Nah, I don’t care what you call it. I’d do it either way.”

Also for the record, I used ‘Nirvana’ in the headline because ‘surviving members of Nirvana’ can get too long. Also, Dave Grohl has referred to them as Nirvana in interviews with The Daily Telegraph and Rolling Stone.

CURT KIRKWOOD SAYS KURT COBAIN QUIT NIRVANA BEFORE HIS DEATH

Greg Prato has a new interview up with The Meat Puppets’ Curt Kirkwood.  Here are a couple of excerpts.

On Kurt Cobain quitting Nirvana: “I know that right before he died, some time around there, I think it was after Unplugged, pretty sure, he quit the band and moved to Milwaukee and joined The Frogs. I don’t know how serious a thing that was, but that’s what I remember someone told me. That’s how I got turned on to The Frogs.”

On performing with Nirvana at MTV Unplugged, Kurt Cobain’s personality, and if he discussed recording songs with Cobain:  “He was always in the moment. Kind of had to dig what came out of the moment out of it, in a way. It was just a strange space whenever I was around that. And I wasn’t around a lot. I did have a week where we practiced for that thing in New Jersey and we’d go over there every day. But Kurt would just show up some and play with the other guys some. We’d wait a lot, and then he would show up.  He wasn’t very conversive, just really, really casual. And I didn’t feel like it was anything where I could go, ‘Hey, you want to do something?’ I was pretty blown away by the whole thing, just on the level of how it was and wasn’t, like my concept of it. It was a strange thing to be around, because there was so much attention at any point coming from every direction. And you had to keep your head or it could make you uptight, I think.”

MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN DISCUSSES SPLITTING HIS TIME BETWEEN WINEMAKING AND MUSIC

Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan recently spoke to Tonedeaf about splitting his time between winemaking and music.

“I’m not going to be able to dedicate twelve months out of the year toward the project (Puscifer). Anyone who works in the wine industry [knows], there’s a window of time where you have to be in there doing that, and so as long as my bandmates understand that, we can completely work around that schedule. There’s plenty of time in the year.”

The “rotating door works”, because of its dynamic agreement. A member departing for other commitments is fine; “as long as you’re not gonna get mad when I hire this other guy,” he confers.

GARBAGE CONTINUE TO PRAISE DAVE GROHL’S SOUND CITY

The following comes from Garbage’s  official Facebook page

“BV posted about Dave Grohl’s elegant and heartbreaking paean to SoundCity earlier this month but I think it bears repeating. Go see this movie. It is gorgeous. And not just because our lil buddy and drummer Butch Vig is quoted throughout (although he does a lovely job as usual) but because the film is mesmerizing and magical. Because it really captures what it feels like to stay up late, in a dumpy kind of place that only looks beautiful to the people who inhabit it. All of them lost in the hunt to capture a feeling, a memory, a joy to then transform whatever they happen to catch that night into a glorious sound that then moves and transforms not only themselves but other people.
It also pays tribute to the skill of the engineers, the producers, the studio managers, the owners, all the old school believers who also poured their souls and their time into the running and sustainment not only of Sound City although that is the particular focus of this movie but all the Analogue studios around the world that are being forced out of business today to make way for a more homogenized, modernized, digitized business.
Dave Grohl has done something important with this movie so don’t be surprised if he earns himself an Oscar Nomination this time next year for his labour and his pains.
Yup. It’s that good. So watch it.”

MIKE MCCREADY SAYS PEARL JAM WILL RELEASE ‘EXPERIMENTAL’ NEW ALBUM THIS YEAR

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready revealed in a new interview with Rolling Stone that Pearl Jam are currently working on demos for their new album, and will record soon. He also said that there are 7 songs nearly completed, and another 15 they plan to tackle soon along with any ideas Eddie Vedder might bring in. He said the album should be out in 2013.

McCready also described the new material, “I would say as a cliché answer it’s kind of a logical extension of what Backspacer was. But I think there’s a little bit more experimental stuff going on. There’s a Pink Floyd vibe to some of it, there’s a punk rock edge to other stuff.”
