BILLY CORGAN SAYS HE’S NOT A BIG EDDIE VEDDER FAN, BUT RESPECTS HIM OVER IMITATORS

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan discussed Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder on Opie and Anthony on Thursday, “You can’t manufacture people like me. Maybe you don’t want to. How many Eddie Vedder clones have they marched out? And I’m not a big Vedder fan, but at least he’s Eddie Vedder. You know who he is, you know what he’s about. Okay great, these other people I don’t know what they think. They might be from Mars for all I know.”

A few years ago, onstage during the Smashing Pumpkins 20th Anniversary Tour, Corgan talked about Vedder’s song for the Cubs, “If the Cubs did have a chance this last year that just passed, fuckin’ Eddie Vedder killed that shit dead. Last I checked Eddie ain’t living here, okay? Eddie ain’t living here to write a song about my fuckin’ team.”

BILLY CORGAN TALKS THE GRUNGE MOVEMENT, PRAISES ALICE IN CHAINS & NIRVANA

-Billy said the 3 songs he wishes he had written are Down in a Hole by Alice In Chains, Polly by Nirvana, and Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles.

-Said he was fine being associated with the Grunge movement since he respected the other bands. When asked by the interviewer what his 5 definitive Grunge albums were he said probably Pearl Jam’s Ten and Nirvana’s Nevermind, but said many Grunge bands unfortunately did not last long enough to make their definitive albums. He said Kurt Cobain didn’t live long enough to make his White Album, he mentioned that could have changed the course of rock. When also talking about being associated with Grunge he said the Pumpkins were more diverse and not one trick ponies. He said nobody else in his generation could have written a song like Tonight, Tonight.

EDDIE VEDDER DISCUSSES WILLIE NELSON’S COVER OF “JUST BREATHE”

This is from the fanviews topic for Pearl Jam’s Isle of Wight festival performance on the PearlJam.com forums:

Ed talks about Willie Nelson covering “Just Breathe” and what an honor it is. He jokes about now all he can do is hear the way Willie sings the song and how Ed wants to sing it that way. He then sings a line imitating Willie’s vocal style. Ed says “He sings it better than me”. The band then plays the song with Ed singing normally.

EDDIE VEDDER REVEALS HIS INSPIRATION BEHIND THE PEARL JAM SONG “DEEP”

This is from the fanviews thread on the PearlJam.com forums for yesterday’s Pearl Jam show in Manchester:

Ed discusses the idea of observing and interacting with poorly behaved people serves as an inspiration for how not to behave. He also relates an incident that involved seeing someone on a balcony several stories above the street he was walking that had a needle in his arm. Seeing that inspired him to write “Deep.” The band then played Deep.

PROJECTED FIRST WEEK SALES FOR NEW SMASHING PUMPKINS ALBUM ‘OCEANIA’

Based on first day sales, Hits Daily Double is reporting that The Smashing Pumpkins’ new album Oceania will sell 45-50,000 copies in its first week on sale. The Pumpkins’ most recent album Zeitgeist (released in July 2007) sold 145,000 copies in it’s first week. Oceania did pretty well considering it didn’t have any real marketing push outside of interviews, if they had released a radio single I think it could have sold 60-75,000 copies.

BILLY CORGAN SAYS HE RESPECTS AXL ROSE’S DECISION TO NO SHOW GNR’S HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

From Triple M‘s new radio interview with Billy Corgan.  This is a quote of BillCo talking about Axl Rose’s decision to no show Guns N’ Roses Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame induction:

“I’ve actually come out in a few interviews and said that I actually really appreciate the position that Axl was in and why he didn’t want to go. I think he felt like he was being set up, and in a way he was wise not to go because he would only have come out like he was being a spoiled sport. He didn’t want to play nice with the old team, and he obviously has his personal reasons. But also, the minute he gets up on stage with the original band, then everything else he does that isn’t that is like, it’s almost as if he’s trying not to do something, and he hasn’t been doing it in many years. There’s an expectation, it gets put on me. I’ll be looking on my Twitter and someone will write ‘why don’t you get back together with your original band?’ Oh is it the lawsuits, which lawsuit do you want me to forget? That kind of stuff. Behind the scenes, it’s not as simple as that you know we all changed. All of us are different people than we were in the 90’s. I’m not sure I would have anything to talk to them about, I have plenty to talk about with my band now.”

In the same interview Billy also said, “If I could legally kill people, it would be hipsters.”
