CHRIS CORNELL SAYS SOUNDGARDEN UNLIKELY TO PLAY NEW MATERIAL ON SUMMER TOUR

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell was interviewed on FM96 and again stated that Soundgarden’s new album won’t be out until spring 2012. He also said there’s a slight possibility of new material being played live on the July tour but it is very unlikely as the band want to focus on old material. Chris also revealed that the chorus on “Black Rain” was newly written and recorded, which many fans had guessed.

CHRIS CORNELL REFLECTS ON THE GRUNGE EXPLOSION OF THE EARLY 90’S

This is from Live 105‘s new interview with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell:

In your opinion today, looking back at kind of the whole Grunge explosion that you guys were a key part of, what did it all mean and what does it all mean today?

Like punk rock I suppose it is a period of music that can be pointed to and to some degree I suppose defined. It was a huge cultural shakeup in popular music that started with that. It wasn’t just Seattle bands there were other bands that was a part of it. Metallica was part of it, Red Hot Chilli Peppers were a part of it, Jane’s Addiction was part of it. There was a big shift from what was sort of the paradon of popular rock music to something completely different and symbolism changed, everything changed.

DAVE GROHL SAYS THERE WILL BE ‘VERY SPECIAL’ SURPRISES TO COMMEMORATE NEVERMIND’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY

Thanks to Andrei for letting me know about this:

This is a short excerpt from RollingStone.com‘s new article on Nirvana’s Nevermind celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year:

Even still, Grohl hints at other Nevermind anniversary surprises down the line. “I wouldn’t doubt it if something very special happens – we have a few things up our sleeves. I can’t really say anything yet. But you’ll see. It’ll be fun.”

Kevin Moyer went into his attic studio alone with an idea and emerged with an emotionally vibrant compilation full of life and found sounds. By collaborating street musicians with friends and music professionals, he tells a story of life on the streets and the roads leading to and from there.

With thick layers of raw and polished instrumentation, the music hits like waves of emotion eddying between the warmth of a large wool blanket and the cold of a concrete pillow.

As the sounds of turntable beats wind through crowded streets and dark alleys, inspired guitars and haunting vocals dig into your chest and squeeze your heart.

FIRE BREAKS OUT AT COURTNEY LOVE’S NEW YORK TOWNHOUSE

Credit: New York Magazine

A small fire broke out at Courtney Love’s West Village townhouse on Thursday, the New York Times reports. Thankfully, Love is as fine as she was before: The blaze began on the fourth-floor of her gorgeous West 10th Street abode — “probably started by a candle next to the curtains” — but she managed to extinguish it by the time firemen showed up. With “a male occupant” in her home at the time, Love placed the 911 call herself, at around 1:52 a.m. We’re not doubting the severity of the situation. Perhaps she was afraid. Or perhaps she wanted to get in “Page Six.” Or perhaps she just wanted a fleet of firemen to show up to her townhouse at 2 a.m., and if she didn’t do exactly what she wanted when she wanted, she would not be Courtney Love.

SCREAMING TREES TO RELEASE FINAL ALBUM ‘LAST WORDS’ IN AUGUST

From the Screaming Trees official Facebook:

In the waning months of the 20th century, legendary Seattle band Screaming Trees went back into the studio one last time. Having been released from their label and realizing that the outlook was grim, the Trees entered Stone Gossard’s Studio Litho to preserve the last batch of songs the band had written. Financed by the band and produced by drummer Barrett Martin, these sessions proved to be their last. On June 25th, 2000, the Trees played their final concert in front of 20,000 people at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium, after which the band members went their separate ways. The final recordings were never mixed or released, and for more than a decade, the original two-inch tapes lay gathering dust in the basement of Gossard’s studio.

Twelve years later, in the winter of 2011, Martin and long-time friend and producer Jack Endino found the two-inch multi-track reels, carefully baked and cleaned the tapes, transferred them to a digital format, and brought back to life those final 10 songs. To their pleasant surprise, the music had a raw, energetic quality, with the band cracking jokes and howling with laughter between takes – they were clearly having a good time. Mark Lanegan’s smokey baritone was in top form and so was the band, with original members Gary Lee Conner on electric guitar, his brother Van Conner on bass, and Barrett Martin, the band’s long-time drummer. REM’s Peter Buck guested on acoustic guitar and electric 12-string guitar, and Trees touring guitarist Josh Homme played some rhythm guitar. The sessions were a remarkable last testament to the band’s impressive 15 year career.

This final Screaming Trees album is appropriately titled Last Words: The Final Recordings and will be released internationally as a digital download on August 2nd, on Barrett’s label, Sunyata Music, through IODA/Burnside distribution. CD and vinyl versions of the album will appear in the ensuing months, with the album cover being designed by world-renowned artist Erin Currier.

There are no plans for a reunion, as the band members are finally well-adjusted adults who actually get along with each other and have happily moved on with their lives. Gary Lee started a family and the band, Microdot Gnome, and Van, also a family man, started the band Valis, as well as the label Strange Earth Records. Barrett started his own label, a jazz group, and became a college professor, and Mark has cultivated a highly successful solo career, being recognized as one of the greatest singers of his generation. No, instead of a reunion like so many other bands have done, the Screaming Trees just want to make this final album available to their friends and fans – their Last Words, so to speak.

MATT CAMERON SAYS SOUNDGARDEN PLAN TO FINISH RECORDING NEW ALBUM IN AUGUST

Yesterday Chris Cornell said that Soundgarden’s new album would be out in spring 2012, but now Matt Cameron has said in a new interview with WAAF that recording for the album should be done in August. Cameron claimed that after Soundgarden’s tour in August, they plan to record a couple more songs for the album and “hopefully mix it and put it out.”  He also said the album is 80% finished.  This makes it sound like the album will definitely be out before the spring.

Chris’ quote yesterday was kind of in a joking tone about a spring 2012 release, it went along with Chris saying that hopefully the world doesn’t end so people can hear the album. Matt’s quote about the time frame of finishing the album sounded more direct and serious though.

PEARL JAM TO PLAY AT FENWAY PARK IN SEPTEMBER?

I’ve read this rumor on the Ten Club rumor for a month or so but thought it might be one of those dead end rumors that end up on there a lot, but this one may have some legs, hopefully for the fans in Boston. This is from BostonHerald.com:

Don’t breathe a word of this, because it’s all supposed to be on the DL, but the Impression That (We) Get is that the Dropkick Murphys, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and perhaps even Pearl Jam will rock Fenway Park [map] in September.

Sources told the Track yesterday that ballpark biggies applied to the city for concert permits on Thursday, Sept. 8 through Saturday, Sept. 10 and that the Sox are seeking permission to host concerts by two local bands as well as GM Theo Epstein’s personal rock fave. A public hearing on the shows is set for Monday.

20TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION OF NIRVANA’S NEVERMIND TO BE RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER

20th ANNIVERSARY OF NIRVANA’S “NEVERMIND” ALBUM CELEBRATED WITH A DELUXE EDITION IN SEPTEMBER

Nirvana, the trio comprised of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, hailed originally from a coastal fishing town in Washington and rose to become one of the most influential rock bands in history with irreverence, intense honesty and an overriding passion. The cultural shift Nirvana’s Nevermind initiated was felt instantly on release — and the profundity and depth of that shift becomes even more apparent when seen through the prism of the two decades of art and music created in its wake.

Released in September of 1991, Nirvana’s Nevermind garnered near-unanimous praise and rose within a few months to the No. 1 slot on Billboard’s U.S. sales chart. Nevermind was propelled to No. 1 across the globe by their young fans worldwide that identified with the band and embraced their anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and its landmark music video. Since then, it has sold more than 30 million albums.

Nirvana changed the course of popular music forever and remains an inspiration to those who have followed.

Today, Universal Music Enterprises is pleased to announce the 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition of Nirvana’s Nevermind available September 19, 2011, in the U.K. and September 20, 2011, in North America. The CDs will include previously unreleased recordings, rarities, b-sides, BBC radio appearances, alternative mixes, rare live recordings and an unreleased concert in its entirety on DVD.

The 20th anniversary of Nirvana will be marked throughout the year, with various events and releases.

CHRIS CORNELL SAYS NEW SOUNDGARDEN ALBUM WILL BE RELEASED IN SPRING 2012

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell said today in a new interview with WBAB that Soundgarden’s new album won’t be released until spring 2012. This is quite surprising as Matt Cameron had said just a couple months ago that the band should be done recording in May.

I’m a little skeptical, Soundgarden have been full of surprises since their reunion so Chris could be trying to make fans think the release will be later than it actually will be. That’s just my opinion though.
