CHRIS CORNELL SAYS HE SINGS “HIGH RANGE” ON NEW SOUNDGARDEN ALBUM

Here is an excerpt from Jesse Shrock’s interview with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in Beat Magazine.

Speaking with Cornell, it’s practically inevitable that the Soundgarden reunion be our initial focus; not just because of my own burning curiosity, but because our interview was deferred a day so that Chris could complete one of the few remaining recording sessions for the new album. “For this one, I was by myself, doing vocals, and also writing,” Cornell explains. “In terms of material, I think we’re good now. I think we’re done.”

As for how the new material might compare to the band’s genre-defining albums of the 90s, Cornell maintains an air of mystery. “Well you know, what we do always feels new,” he says. “We never repeated ourselves, ever. If anything was too reminiscent of something else we’d done, we wouldn’t bother spending time on it.

“I think I went through a period where I wasn’t singing in the highest range,” he says. “So over the last couple years, since I’ve been writing songs that are in that range again, it’s been a test to see whether it would come back. And I can say that it was just a matter of doing it, for it to return completely. On some of the songs I’m doing now… there’s stuff that is as high-range as anything I’ve ever done.”

KIM THAYIL SAYS SOUNDGARDEN ARE RECORDING PARTS OF THEIR NEW ALBUM SEPARATELY

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil was interviewed on 99.9 The Fox and had the following to say about Soundgarden’s new album. You can listen to the full interview by clicking here.

-Mentioned he and Ben record guitar and bass parts when Chris and Matt are out of town. Chris records some vocals at home in Los Angeles and does some writing on the road. They share ideas via e-mail too.

-Almost all the writing is done with the four of them in the room initially, but recording is an entirely different process.

-New album is still untitled, joked maybe the new album will be “Soundgarden untitled.”

-The new album is primarily all new songs and ideas, but some are based off of old riff ideas from the Superuknown and Down on the Upside sessions.

Kim sounded very excited when talking about the new album and revealed a lot of stuff. Definitely fun to listen to this after the secretive tone of last year’s interviews.  Also it is not irregular at all to hear about a band recording parts of their album separately.  Stone Temple Pilots did this for their self-titled album from last year.

REVIEWS FROM LAST NIGHT’S EDDIE VEDDER SHOW IN CHICAGO

I.Am.Mine.818 posted this on the Ten Club board:

That was awesome. Such a great show. Ed loved the crowd cause for the most part they [we] were respectful. He hinted something about the cameras and after that there were a limited number of flashes seen. Awesome setlist and awesome poster. I was happy to get there in time to get a poster and shirt and get them both back to my hotel before the show. I’m so happy I got to go all the way from NJ.

iamica posted this on the Ten Club board:

Great show. Eddie was in a good mood tonight! He was as giddy as a little kid up there, joking with the audience and really getting into the music. He told the story of how he accidentally locked himself out of a hotel room when he was half naked, and had to go down to the front desk to get let back in. He also told a story about how he used to go to the Chicago Theatre “back in the days when it was a s—hole, and I was a s—head”.
IMMORTALITY. Need I say more? I was so stoked to hear that live.
I had never heard Glen Hasard before, he was a fantastic opening act. Oh, and to the guy to yelled that rude comment at Glen when he was in the middle of a really sad story: next time, do us all a favor and skip the opening act (and the whole concert while you’re at it).
Special thanks to +TremoR_ChrisT+ and his 2 friends for buying me a beer before the show.
Can’t wait until tomorrow night!

STORY BEHIND COURTNEY LOVE BEING DUMPED BY HER BRITISH BOYFRIEND

Credit: gather.com

Courtney Love is reportedly single once again after Henry Allsopp, a British art dealer, broke off their seven-month relationship. Incidentally, Allsopp is the godson of Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. Does the irony of Love being so close to royalty strike anyone else as kind of funny?

According to Popeater, Love moved in with Allsopp last November, and sources say she “made herself right at home.”

“Most of the family were rather alarmed by how besotted he was and feared she had delusions of landing herself a title—she used to joke about becoming Lady Love,” the source says.

Courtney Love and British royalty—the two simply don’t go hand in hand. She is about as far from the staunch and proper aristocratic types that the royals tend to associate with as a king is to a pauper.

Alas the world won’t be hearing of a royal wedding involving Courtney Love—and that’s quite a shame, isn’t it? Do you think she could have rivaled the class and good graces of Kate Middleton and her sister Pippa?

MARK ARM SAYS MUDHONEY HAVE SIX NEW SONGS COMPLETED

Here are a couple of quotes from Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm in his new interview with Fucking Nostalgic.

“Well, a day in my life is that I go to work. I work at Sub Pop, so I don’t have the luxury of complete creative freedom. But for me, the creative process, you kind of have to work for it a little bit…you know? Sometimes, things will just hit when you’re driving, or walking down the street. But for the most part, I actually need to make an effort to go down to the basement, and listen to the many, many riffs that we’ve recorded. And I just need to put words to ‘em. But I just haven’t had the time to go do that. Kind of crazy, huh, how real life just kind of catches up with you?”

“Oh, for sure [we’re working on a new Mudhoney album]! But there just isn’t the same rush as when you’re younger. We’re a lot more patient now. We have about six completed songs. Dan keeps pushing for us to come up with a large stockpile of songs. And I think that’s what we’re gonna do.”

DAVE GROHL ALMOST QUIT MUSIC IN 2001 BECAUSE HE THOUGHT “MUSIC EQUALS DEATH”

From the new Dave Grohl interview on the Observer:

These days the Foos’ drummer, Taylor Hawkins, is clean. He’s a weather-beaten but smiling 39-year-old in shorts and tennis socks, married with a son: disgustingly domesticated. Back in 2001, however, he was a serious heroin user, and on tour that year he overdosed and was admitted to a London hospital. “I’ve seen so many people just lose it all with drugs and die,” says Grohl, “So I freaked out.”

Hawkins didn’t die. After two weeks in a coma he woke up, recovery confirmed when he turned to Grohl and told him (as was apparently the band’s way) to “fuck off”. Grohl had been beside his bed for two weeks. Years earlier, aged 18, Grohl had seen a friend take too much coke and suffer a heart attack in a Virginia car park. Before his death, in 1994, Kurt Cobain had already collapsed in Rome after overdosing on heroin. Grohl, in another country, watched him being wheeled into an ambulance on TV; when he spoke to his friend on the phone he told him: “I don’t want you to die.” Cobain had only a few weeks to go.

It must feel that he’s had to endure this – a helpless view from the fringes – too often. “Absolutely,” says Grohl quietly. “When Taylor wound up in hospital I was ready to quit music. Because, to me, it felt like music equalled death. I started praying. I’ve never been to church in my life, and I’m walking back from Taylor’s hospital to our hotel every night, praying out loud in the streets of London. I don’t even know if I believe in God. But I felt like, y’know, this is just not right, y’know, what kind of God would let this…”

DAVE GROHL SAYS PLAYING “SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT” LAST YEAR WAS LIKE CONFRONTING A GHOST

Dave didn’t say the word confronting, but I didn’t know how else to word the headline.  Here’s a quote from Dave Grohl’s recent interview with the Observer:

“Krist is on bass, Pat’s on guitar. I’m on drums,” Grohl explains. “Krist says, ‘You wanna run through some oldies?’ Me and Pat look at each other. I mean, that’s something I’ve never considered before. I was like ‘OK.’ Krist says, ‘Fuck it, let’s do ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. And Pat starts playing and we kick into it. I haven’t played that drumbeat in 17 years.”

“It was like… a ghost,” he concluded “It was heavy.”

MELODIES AND DREAMS – THE ANDREW WOOD SOLO ALBUM

The album is comprised of never before released, intimate tracks by Andrew Wood. The songs have been carefully selected from hundreds of recordings recovered during the making of the film, and have been painstakingly restored and re-mastered from their original cassettes and condition.

All songs were recorded by Andrew Wood himself and they span his entire career from the early days alone in Landrew’s Lovenest (his bedroom at home), to the house he shared with Chris Cornell when his career began to take off, and on to the apartment he shared with Xana in the end.

Intercut between the songs are recordings of Andrew speaking as Landrew the Lovechild. The choice to include Andy’s dialog between tracks stems from the spirit of how Andy often recorded and released his own original cassettes.

The song Cool Marmalade is the last song Andrew Wood ever wrote and recorded, only weeks before his death.

The final track on the album is a song written and performed by Chris Cornell and recorded by Andrew Wood. Although Chris and Andy would record each other performing often, this single track is the only existing recording from the two of these artists together in any means.

RETURN TO OLYMPUS

Originally released in 1995 by Stone Gossard and Regan Hagar on Loosegroove Records, the only official Malfunkshun album “Return to Olympus” has been out of print for many years. The album is being re-released as part of this boxed set, and includes the two Malfunkshun tracks from the Deep Six compilation as bonus material.
